Terry Fox Run
What an awesome day!  We started with the assembly in the gym.  We were lead in a warm-up by the grade fives and sixes.  We all met at the starting line and then the run began.  We ran for about 40 minutes.  Our class total was 143 laps!  Our training was worth it.  We were so proud of how hard we all tried even though it was a wet and rainy day.  Thank you to all the volunteers that came to cheer us on.

Learning Highlights

Today we met our Big Buddy for this year.  We will be buddies with Mr. Pedenko's class.  We practiced our Terry Fox route with them.  We walked the snow route and then we ran the route that we will do if it is not raining or snowing.  We were very excited to meet our new friends.

In science and art we have been working to sketch, paint and add details to the bee balm and the Wild Rose Hips.  This week we added describing words about the plants leaves and petals.  We noticed things like serrated leaf edges, leaf shapes and how they vary as well as whether or not the stems or leaves had fine hairs on them.  Our observation skills are really improving!  We have added these descriptive ideas to our plant identification books.

In math we have been working on completing our yes/no survey and we have been learning about how to make a bar graph to show our information.

Learning Highlights
We have been doing very important work as Biologists.  In our plant study we have been sketching the bee balm and Golden Rod flowers this week.  We are improving in our observation skills and adding details to our sketches.  We are focusing on the details of the leaves, flower and stem when we sketch.  We have noticed that some flowers have leaves that are staggered on the stem and some are opposite each other.  We have also noticed the variety of petal shapes.  In our writing we have been working on our Plant Identification Books.  Our focus has been to add descriptive ideas about each of the flowers in our books.

In Math we have been working on our Hobby picture graph and surveying and tallying. This week we began a yes/no survey and each student had to decide what they wanted their question to be.  Once the question was written the survey was conducted, tallied and then the number for each category written down.

In technology time we have been using the chrome books  and practicing our skills of logging on to the computer.

We are excited to share some of these things with you tomorrow evening.

Scavenger Hunt and Sketching The Bee Balm or Bergamont Plant

Reminders
- Monday is library day.
- Thursday evening, 5:00 - 7:00, is Meet and Greet and Learn about your child's day at school.
- Friday, September 20th, there is no school for students.

In our Scavenger hunt today we had to look for different kinds of plants and some of them were weeds.  We saw lots of goatsbeard and other weeds.  When we founds a weed such as the dandelion or the goatsbeard we had to rip it out of the ground and we put them into a bag.  We don't want to leave the weeds there to take all the nutrients away from the good, healthy plants.  The scavenger hunt helped us to get better at being junior biologists because we were learning about recognizing different weeds and plants that are in Whispering Woods.  We were also stewards of the Whispering Woods today by picking up some of the garbage and weeds.

Today we sketched the Bee balm in the Natureground.  Next week we will be painting the plant in our art journals.  We will also be learning about what the plants were used for by the Indigenous People.

Learning Highlights

Tools For A Biologist
This week we started making our own plant identification books.  First we had to count out and put together 12 pages into a book.  Next we had to cut and glue all the flower pictures into the book with one on each page.  Today we started writing the names of the plants on each page.  All the plants are from the Natureground.  Some people began to write the colors that would help to identify the flower.  We are excited to use this book as we begin our studies as junior biologists this year.

Hobby Survey and Graph
We have been working on tallying a survey about hobbies that kids in room one like to do.  This week we tallied each hobby and now we are going to create a graph.  Today we worked on setting up the graph and title. We each had to choose the hobbies we wanted to show on our graph and draw a small picture along the axis to represent that hobby. The grade ones have to show at least 3 and the grade twos have to show at least 5. Tomorrow we will begin to show our information by drawing the pictures to represent the number on our picture graph.

Blanketflower Sketch and Painting
In our Natureground study we sketched the Great Blanketflower.  We looked at parts of the flower and seed pods.  We have also been reading stories and having class discussions about seeds and how they get transported in nature.  We used water color paints to paint our flowers and now we will add details on our second painting day.  These pictures show us working on our sketches and painting.

Pop Portraits
In our morning center time we have been working to add the dots to our self portraits.  Once we have all the colors in, then we are mounting it onto black paper.  We are very proud of how our portraits look.  It has taken a lot of patience and perseverance to finish it.  We have worked very hard!
