Check out this video from our Beaker Head Challenge.
Today was the Terry Fox run.  In the Terry Fox Run Room 1 ran a total of 114 km!
Before the run we all went to the gym and we had a pep rally.  We did some warmups in the gym lead by the Me to We club to get us ready for running.  Room one and room two together ran a total of 237 kilometers. ( Thanks to Hailey for figuring out that tricky math for us)  Some of us surprised ourselves and did more laps than we thought we would.

Today we tried out the beet chips that we made yesterday.  They tasted salty peppery, sweet and some tasted bitter .  Before the Terry Fox run we worked on our recipe books.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday 29 September 2016

Can you guess who?

Today we started baking some beet chips.  It takes a long time for the beet chips to bake so we will try them tomorrow.  We worked to put together our Guess Who projects.  Soon you will see them hanging in the hallway.  It will be a gallery of surprises!

Today an author came to visit us at school.  His name is Shane Peacock and he wrote the story that we read a couple weeks ago called, "The Artist and Me".  He also writes books for older kids and adults too. I am bringing home an order form in case you want to order some of the books.  The order form has to be back by Monday.

Tomorrow is our Terry Fox Run.  We will begin our run at 10:45 and run or walk till 11:30.  I need to make sure that I have shoes on my feet that are good shoes for running in.  I need to remember to bring a water bottle with my name on it too.  I am bringing home a sticker for my shirt tomorrow and also a tatoo that I might get you to help me put on for my big run.  We will run rain or shine.

Wednesday 28 September 2016

We baked some delicious zucchini bread today. Each of us helped to do something to make the bread.  Ask me what my job was.  We also decorated a recipe

We went to the woods and added to our nature collection.  We will be using these things for math. We will be sorting and playing Whats My Rule.

Some of us finished painting our water color portraits today and some of us still need a bit more time.

Terry Fox run is only two days away.  Today we did four laps around the field.  Please remember to bring a toonie for our Terry Fox box in the classroom.

Tuesday 27 September 2016

We had fun making potato wedge fries today with our harvest potatoes.  They were so nutritious and delicious we ate all of them up!  We each got to have four wedges. The ingredients were potatoes, seasoning and olive oil.  We will be bringing home a recipe book with all our recipes next week.  Tomorrow we will be baking with the zucchini.

In math today we went to the WhisperingWoods and we collected things from the woods.  We each had a small bag to fill.  Tomorrow we will be using those things to sort and play the game "Whats my Rule?"

Even though it was chilly we went out to practice our Terry Fox laps.  Then we played Hill Dill Come Over the Hill.
We started painting our water color self portraits and we will work on them again tomorrow.

We had a surprise letter today from Ireland.  It came from Chelsea's and Jessica's granny.  She told us that she enjoys reading the blog everyday because she misses them so much!

In music we practiced a song for Remembrance Day.  It is called, "Sing For Peace"

We have a lap top cart with some laptops shared between room one and two in our classroom.  Students will be using the laptops for a variety of reasons and will also be listening to stories and playing educational games.  If you would like your child to have their own set of ear buds for the computer {for hygienic reasons} please send them to school with your child's name on it and in a small plastic ziploc.  The ear buds will be kept in your child's desk at school.  Please don't feel that you need to go and purchase any as there will some available at school to share.  Often families have extras at home and if this is the case they can be put to great use at school.  Thank you.

Monday 26 September 2016

Our Terry Fox run is this Friday we tried to do four training laps today.  Since we all finished at different times we got to go to the park when our laps were done.

Today we went to the library and we got to choose two books.  The books have to be returned by next Monday or they can be brought back to be renewed next Monday.  Each Monday will be our library day.

This afternoon we got our special water color paper to begin the drawing of our self portrait.  Tomorrow we will begin to paint them.  When we finish our painting it will go into a fancy, special frame.

This morning we worked in our journals and we had to draw and write about our weekend.  If we did not finish we still have Wednesday to try and finish.  The grade ones should try to write three ideas and the grade two students are trying to write five or more.

In math we played "Guess My Rule".  We had to look at who was standing at the front and we had to see if there was something in common about all of them.  It is helping us to begin to look at attributes.

Please remember to bring "Toonies for Terry".  Money will be collected each day until Friday.

Thursday 22 September 2016

Thank you for signing up for your Face to Face conference time.  This first conference is a chance for you to share information with me about your child as well as any goals that you may have decided together for this year.  Please bring with you, your parent viewpoint questionnaire so that we can use that for our discussion.  When you come to the conference you will also receive the Big Box of cards fundraiser.  It will be sitting on your child's desk in the classroom.  Please take it home with you and return any unsold boxes back to the school.

Just a reminder that there will be no classes tomorrow.  A pledge form is being sent home today for our Terry Fox run at the end of next week.  If you would like to send a toonie donation the boxes will be set out next week in each classroom. Our Terry Fox run will be next Friday.

Wednesday 21 September 2016

Today we had a practice fire drill.  It reminded us that we needed to have indoor shoes at school.  We also worked on our self portraits.  We will be practicing using water colors on our portraits tomorrow.  In gym we played a game called Hill Dill Come Over The Hill.  It was a line game and we played it outside.  We also practiced some Terry Fox laps around the field.

Today we learned how to make a Venn Diagram in Math.  We had to go with a buddy and we had some topics that we had to ask about.  When we had something that was the same we put it in the middle and when we had an answer that was different we had to put it on our own sides of the circles.
Some topics were pets, sisters, brothers, favorite colors and food, sports and classroom number, birthday month.

We tried to finish our Guess Who writing of our good copy and we had to finish our vegetable murals for math.

Tuesday 20 September 2016

Today we worked on our Guess Who project.  We have started typing or writing our Guess Who clues to go with our self portraits.  We read a story about Vincent VanGogh and we looked at portraits that grown ups had made and also ones that kids had made.  We started a practice self portrait.  These are important things to remember when you have to draw yourself:
We all started by drawing an oval shape.  Then...
1. Fold the paper in half both ways and use the lines to help you line up your eyes, nose and mouth.
2. To see where you have to draw your ears you just draw a line straight back from your eyes.  That will be where the top of your ears go.
3. Don't forget to draw your neck because your head needs an attachment!
4. Don't forget to draw the eyes with an iris and a pupil.
5.  Remember to add the shoulders.

In math today we started a mural to show how many vegetables we harvested last Friday from our Sun Circle Garden.  We had to cut and glue them into groups of five.  This helped us keep track and we could count them by fives.
We had indoor gym today.  We played a game called Fox and Chicks.   You have to get to the other side before the fox catches you.   If you get caught you become a fox too!  We also trained for the Terry Fox run by running for five minutes in the gym.   In music today we learned some new songs and one of them will be for Remembrance Day

Reminders
Please remember to book your face to face conference by calling Mrs. Rennie at the office for your time either Thursday or Friday.  This is a time for you to share information with me about your child.  Please remember to fill out the parent viewpoint questionnaire and return it with you when you come to your scheduled Face to Face conference.

Now that the weather is cooling off please ensure that your child comes to school dressed for the weather as they still must be outside for recess and lunchtime recess.

Monday 19 September 2016

Today we got to go and see the Scholastic Book Fair Books in the library.  The books will be for sale later in the week.  We will be bringing home a small piece of paper about the book fair in our folders today.  Grade ones started to do some word work today with Mrs. Hamby at the small carpet while the grade twos were reading at their desks.  We have started practising to sound out and spell words.  Today we wrote in our journals about Fresh air Fridays harvest and also about our weekend.

In math today we had to count our harvest vegetables.  We had to mark how many we had using tallies.  We practised our counting skills by organizing our vegetables in groups of five so that they would be easier to count.

We are getting better at running farther for our Terry Fox training.  Most of us ran four laps of the field today.  Some of us are getting faster at running too!

Today there will be a green question sheet coming home for you to fill out and bring to face to face conferences.  If you have not called to book a conference time please do so.

Friday 16 September 2016

Guess what we did today!  We harvested our sun circle garden.  We had digging stations and washing stations and weeding stations.  First we dug up the root vegetables.  Then some of us were in charge of taking the vegetables to the washing station.  At the washing station the vegetables were washed and then put out into the sun to dry.  After we had all the vegetables out of the planter we had to weed the planter and smooth the dirt so that it could rest for the winter.  Once we came inside we drew a harvesting picture in our Fresh Air Friday journals.  We had a snack surprise before we went home.  It was green bean fries! We baked the beans from our harvest last week.  We added parmesan cheese, olive oil and then put them on a baking sheet and baked them at 425 for 15 minutes.

Some more pics from today!

This has been such an exciting week.  Today we filmed our video.  We will keep you in suspense until we have a chance to see the video.  We went out into the woods and then Ashton's dad came and filmed us for our part in the movie.  Please enjoy some of our photos from the week.

Wednesday 14 September 2016

Today we worked to complete our Beaker Head projects.  We got to finish creating the sound and then we got to decorate it.  Tomorrow we will be going out to the woods to record our part in the video.  It was fun to work on our projects.  Sometimes it was complicated because we had to solve problems to get the instruments to work the way that we wanted it to and connecting the instruments together.  Our instruments needed to be loud enough for the woods.  It was a very tiring day.  We worked really hard.  Some of us created part of our instrument at home and then brought it to school to add to our group instrument.  Some of us braided yarn to add as a decoration on our instrument, like a tassel.
Today in gym we trained for three laps and then we got to try a Bonk picture.

Tuesday 13 September 2016

Today we spent a large part of our day working on our Beaker Head ingenuity challenge.  Rooms 1 and 2 were given the tin cans to come up with interesting sounds that we would use to create a beat. Our job is that we will be the "beat keepers" for the other classes during our video.  We collected objects from Whispering Woods that we might be able to use in our projects either for decorating or for helping to create the sound.  We gathered interesting leaves, twigs, pine cones and rocks.  We also brought in a few other things too.  We had to work in our small groups to try and create an interesting sound that made a good beat.

In music today we read a story called "Pete the Cat".  The cat liked his white shoes and he went for a walk and stepped into all these colors. The story had a catchy song and we learned how to sing the song.

In gym we challenged ourselves to run three laps for our Terry Fox training.

Monday 12 September 2016

We went to an assembly this morning it was for a welcome back and also a Beakerhead kickoff!  Our  ingenuity challenge this week will be making sound and music with the materials they gave us.  We got bubble wrap, a tin can, elastics, glow sticks and ping pong balls.  Tomorrow we are going to work on our project. The whole school will create one 30 second video that we will submit to Beakerhead and we might win a contest.  We are invited to bring some things from home that we think might be good for drumming or that might create interesting sounds with the tin can.

In math today we counted our bean harvest and we had to estimate how many beans we might have all together.  Our group had to create a poster showing how many beans we had in our table group.  We used squares that we colored and glued onto our poster.  Some groups found the counting challenge to be a little bit tricky and some over counted or under counted.

We worked on finishing some of our Guess Who ideas for our writing project.

Today we started our training for the Terry Fox run at the end of September.  We started with two laps.

Please see notice going home today.

Friday 9 September 2016

Today was our first Fresh Air Friday of this school year.  We had so much fun making our discoveries outside.  We harvested our beans today.  We had to draw the bean plants in our new fresh air friday journals.  After we finished drawing we got to pull off the beans and we counted them.  We had four groups from room one.  We counted 46, 45, 53 and 30.  A homework project could be to add all these numbers up.  Next week will will add our numbers to Ms. Boyer's class bean count and then we will see how many we have altogether.

We also had a rainbow chip hunt.  We had to find colors in nature that match the color chip from our rainbow chip bag.  We got to go to the Whispering Woods and to the Natureground to hunt for our colors.  In the Whispering Woods we had to stay inside the boundary of the woods.  We found a flower to match purple and a fuzzy flower to match dark purple.  We also discovered many other color matches.
We were so glad that we had great weather today!

We hope that you enjoy some pictures of our day.

Thursday 8 September 2016

Today at school we read a story called "That's Not A Good Idea!".  We talked about expected and unexpected choices that people might choose to do when we are working in our shared spaces.  We worked with partners and had to come up with two great ideas for what choices kids might make at our school so that everyone feels happy and safe when they are learning.  We painted a picture of our great idea and then we will hang them up in the classroom.  They will remind us of what we need to do so that we all feel happy and safe at school.

We also started a small writing project where we have to write about ourselves.  We brainstormed topics and ideas and then we wrote some of the ideas in our journals.  Some of our topics were; Where I live; My family; Things I like to do; My favorites; My school; What I look like; We will add more to the ideas next week.

This afternoon we had our first music class.  Mrs. Stephure is our music teacher this year.

Tomorrow is our first Fresh Air Friday.  We will spend some of the morning outside doing a Rainbow Chip Walk/Hunt and we will also harvest some of the beans from our Outdoor Garden.
Please make sure that your child is dressed to be outside for most of the morning and send a small recess snack.  Tomorrow the students will be at school for the morning and dismissed at 12:15.

Also there is a notice in your child's backpack about the Welcome back barbecue next week.  If you have not returned your folder please do so that way each day that there is a notice going home it can be sent home in the folder.  Thank you.

Wednesday 7 September 2016

Today we made a birthday graph.  We had to color and put our birthdate on the cupcake.  We discovered that each month has a birthday.  May and July each have 4 birthdays, June has 3, March, November, December and October have two birthdays and all the other months have one.

This morning we wrote in our journals.  We had to write about our summer and then we made a self portrait and glued it into our journals for our writing tomorrow.  We made a topic chart of ideas for our writing tomorrow.  All the topics were things that we might tell about ourselves.

We played a Guess Who Game and from the clues in the box we had to guess if it was about Miss Boyer or Mrs. Hamby.  We found out that Mrs. Hamby loves to cook and that somebody in her family kissed a grizzly bear.

We enjoyed our outside gym time at the playground this afternoon.
We will send home a folder today with forms from the office.  Please sign the forms and return the folder with the forms inside.  Please return the folder so that it can be used throughout the year.

Tuesday 6 September 2016

We had an exciting first day of school. We had to find our desk when we came into the classroom.  Our desks had our names, crayons, erasers and a pencil.  We used our new tools to draw and color a picture about our summer. We played a game to share our holiday pictures.  We had to give 3 clues and kids had to guess what we did for our holiday.  After recess we enjoyed book time with a buddy and then we got to use our new journals.   We had to glue in our picture and then write about what we had drawn. We learned to listen for the clean up songs when it was time for us to clean up, and then meet together at the carpet. We also played a game called True or False.  We had to guess if what our friends said about themselves was true or false.    Mrs. Kidd our lunchroom supervisor came to the classroom to talk to us about lunchtime routines.

This afternoon we made new coat hook tags for our own coat hooks. After we finished our name tags we got to try some of the games, puzzles or lego in the classroom.  We had an outside gym time so that we could play with each other and get to know some of our new friends.  One of our classmates had a birthday and brought some cupcakes for us to enjoy while we were outside.  We ended the day by doing our blog together and sharing our ideas with Mrs. Hamby.

Some extra reminders:
-In the morning the students will line up at the northeast doors to come into the school.  The supervisors will be out on the compound at 8:30 and the bell will ring at 8:40 to allow the students   into the school.
- If you have not yet done so please send indoor shoes to be kept at school as well as an empty pencil or toolbox so that the supplies can be kept in your child's desk.
- A pair of sneakers is often the best for indoor shoes since they are also wearing them for gym time.
