Our Thursday

Reminder that there is no school tomorrow.
Aliana is the helper on Monday.

Have a great weekend everyone!

This morning we read the story called "Arctic Son".  The story is about a boy and his family that live in the Arctic.  The story teaches about how the village hunts and survives through the four seasons.  They thank the animals that they have hunted.  They use every part of the animal.  There was a lot that we learned from the story about Arctic life.
We learned that:
Summer has sunlight all day and night.
Winter has darkness all day and night.
They use whale bones to make Umiaks. This is a boat they use and they cover it with seal skin by sewing the skins together.
Seal skin is waterproof.
The seams get covered with seal oil.
Polar bears, Nanuk, is the most feared predator.
They hunt whales using harpoons and umiaks.

These are just a few of the things we learned from the story.

After recess we worked on our board games.  Today Mrs. Hamby introduced the last part of the project.  It is the feedback.  We have to play the game with three different people and get their feedback of how I can improve my game.  Then I have to decide what I am going to do based upon the feedback that I received. We talked about what good feedback looks like and that it offers suggestion in a positive way.

This afternoon we worked on trying to explain in our own words what happened in the science experiment and why we think this happened.  We had a conversation at the carpet about what happened and Mrs. Hamby wrote some of the reflections on the smart board for us to use if we needed to.

After Music we went outside for some fresh air, much needed vitamin D sunshine and snow play.

Mapping, Pink Shirt Day

We started the day by going to the Pink Shirt Day Coffin Cares Assembly.  At the Assembly we watched a video to show how Pink Shirt Day got started by two people in Nova Scotia that had been bullied themselves.  We talked about things that you could do if you ever felt like you were being bullied and how important it is to talk to an adult and let them know.

In math today we worked on our game boards.  As we finish we will be trying our game out and getting feedback from classmates.
In Science today we did an experiment called Fooling Your Senses.  The question we were investigating was, "Can your senses be fooled by hot and cold temperatures."  Ask me what I had to do for the experiment.  We recorded our Hypothesis and our diagram today and then tomorrow we will record our observations and conclusions.  We talked about what happened and why we think that happened but we didn't have a chance to write our ideas down yet.

Today as part of our Arctic study we worked on a map today. Because we are already prairie experts, we were able to identify the prairie provinces right away and we even remembered the names of the provinces.  Today our job was get the prairie provinces colored in with the same color and then we wrote in the names and we also wrote in Calgary.  Tomorrow we will add the Arctic Region and names.
We also read a book called, "Poles Apart".  It is a non-fiction book that uses facts about climate, landscape, animals and people to compare the two parts of the world.  As we read the book we stopped and talked about it and added some of the things that we knew.  Ask me about some of the facts about the Arctic and the Antartica.

We ended our day by having a visit from Mrs. Boyer and Claire.  We were excited to see them!

Ice Village Observation

Tomorrow is anti-bullying day.  To support this day your child is encouraged to wear pink, orange , red or yellow.
Our helper tomorrow is Joel.

Here is our ice village observation today.

February 26, 2019
Temperature today is -13 degrees Celsius.
The temperatures have been staying below zero but it has been warming up and then dropping down to below -20.
It has been 5 days since our last observation.

Today we noticed that:
-Some of the structures seemed to shrink and were smaller than last time. This may be because between observations the temperatures have warmed up more than last time .
- The sunlight made the ice village look like some of it was glowing. The sunlight travels through the ice.
- Some of them were even more buried under the snow than last time.  We had to dig some of them out from under the snow.  We have had more snow over the weekend and since the last time we made our observations.

- Some of them seem to be cracking and some have pieces that have broken off or popped off.  We think that the cracks and pooping may have to do with the freezing and melting, expanding and contracting.

Clay Lady Second Project Day

Reminder*
Tomorrow is treat day please remember to bring a quarter for each treat.
Wednesday is wear a pink shirt for anti-bullying day.
Tomorrow our helper is Adeline.

Today the grade twos are bringing home a special fluoride study envelope please read it carefully and return it by March 7th.

Today we had our second glass project with the clay lady.  This one we will be able to bring home.  We made an Inukshuk in the style of Ted Harrison. We had many glass colors to choose from for our project.

First we had to draw a plan on a small piece of paper.  The larger clear glass was put right on top of our  plan.  We had to start with the inukshuk and began placing black or dark glass on the glass plate to build our inukshuk.  Next we had to ben wire to create the hooks for hanging.  on top of each piece of wire we had to put two pieces of the same color glass over the wire.
Next we got to add our color glass bands to fill the glass plate.
Our teacher's name was Jennifer.  She said that when she fires the glass in the kiln it gets up to 750 degrees celsius and then it starts to melt the glass.  She made sure that a project was made for each of the people that were away today.

Arctic Games

Today we had our own version of the Arctic Games.  Our grade five and six big buddies helped to run all the events.  We watched a video of the Arctic Game events at the beginning of the morning.   Then all the grade ones and twos got to go outside and try them all out. Most of these events were invented to help develop strength or skills required for hunting and survival in the Arctic.
The events were:
Snowshoeing
Snow building
Seal Crawl
Stick and Bone Game
One Foot High Kick
Curling
Harpoon throw
Running Jump
It was a perfect day for our Arctic Games!
This was a great way for us to kick off the beginning of our Arctic study.
