SOGO Day Four

The Terry Fox run will be next Friday October 5th.

Today it was too cold and wet for us to go to Nose Hill.  Instead we had a mapping activity with symbols.  We went over the symbols before we started Kim went over all the symbols.  Some of them were a green circle for trees, a triangle for start, a double circle for finish, a dash line for pathway, two lines for bridge to name just a few.  The game was called Heads Up Look Up.  That meant we had to look up to spot the symbols and stations and then run  to them.  We did not use keys today but we used alligator clips.  A Big thank you to our volunteers today who braved the cold and snow to help us out.  We loved having SOGO this week!  We hope that we can do it again.

Tomorrow is a regular Fresh Air Friday.  Please make sure that your child is dressed to  outside.  We will be going to Barrett Park and also planting some bulbs at the front of the school.

SOGO Day Three

Today in SOGO we had three stations.

At the first station we had to remember where all the navigation stations were from yesterday.  We didn't have a map this time we had to do it from memory.  We tried to be as fast as we could.

At the second station we had a maze.  To get through the maze we had to follow a map and make sure that we went to each station on the map.  We had to make sure that we went in the correct order that was shown on the map.  We had two different maps to try.

For the third station we played capture the flag.  Each team had to try and steal flags from the other team's side without getting caught.  One team wore pinnies and the other team did not.  When we got tagged we had to sit down and then someone from our team had to rescue us.  If they did we got a free walk back to our side.

Reminder that tomorrow morning we will be going to do our SOGO stations at Nose Hill.  We will be  leaving at 9:00 to begin our walk to the hill.  Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather as it may be chilly.  The best footwear would be a good running shoe.  If you have volunteered please meet us at the front hallway by 9:00.  Thank you so much!

Sogo Adventure Running Day Two

We did two activities today.  One was for endurance and one was  to learn how to navigate a map and find the stations.  We had to find all the spots on the map.  Once we got to each spot we had to use the key to track that we had been there.  We had to find twelve stations.  They were in Whispering Woods and also all around the school yard.  When we finished we had to see if we missed any and then check our ticket to see how long it took us.  If you can volunteer for our class as well as other classes please let us know.
Here is the map we used for our Navigation Activity.
We had to check to see if we went to all twelve stations by comparing it to our ticket.
Getting our maps.
We worked with partners.
Kim is explaining all the symbols on the map to us.
Running the trails.
The trail went through the Whispering Woods.

We had to keep track of our laps using the computer key.
Ben showed us the trail before we started.  That counted as one of our laps.
It was a beautiful fall day.
We had to run 5 laps without stopping.  We were working on endurance.
Running up hill was definitely harder!

SOGO Adventure Running

We had to run around in the woods following the trail of red flags.
We tried to run really fast to improve our speed.
We had to run to each station and put our computer key into the station.    We had to wait for the beep.
It was tracking our time.
Before we started Kim showed us how it all works.  We had to clear the computer chip from the information that was on it already.
When we were running in the woods we had to follow the course that was marked by the flags.
We got little receipts that printed out our time.
The time was tracked by the computer chip that we had on our wrist.
When we ran in the woods we had to work on endurance.
We ran for a whole hour.
We had to watch out for trees and stumps on the trail.
We had a woods station and a field station.
If you would like to volunteer you can join us each day at 9:30.
We will also go to Nose Hill on Thursday and will need volunteers .  Please let me know if you can join us for the morning.
