Tuesday 28 February 2017

This morning we made a title page divider in our journals for our story writing section.  We will use our writing journals this year to include our story writing.  After recess we had word work.  Today in word work the grade ones worked on the "it" word family and three new no excuse words.  We had to practice them in our neatest printing.  The no excuse words are: with, his and they.

In math today we learned and played a game called, "Race to 100". We played with a partner and we had to take turns rolling two dice.  We had to add up the dots and then put that number of tallies in our math journal.  We had to group our tallies into fives. When it was our turn again we had to roll and then add tallies to what we already had.  The first person whose total reached 100 won the game. This game helps us practice our tallying, counting by fives and adding our numbers together.  Some of us still had to work on our show what you knows.

This afternoon we had more time to add ideas to our pros and cons chart about the human impact on Whispering Woods ideas we started yesterday.  The group had to finish their ideas and then look at the ideas to decide what the group's recommendation would be.  The recommendation would be based upon which category had the most ideas, pros or cons.

In gym we continued to do the Jungle Safari.  Today we had guards and if your feet moved off the green lines or if you made a mistake the guard would send you back to the last red mat.  Today the guards were Diego, Taiki, Danish, Muhammed, Poorvi, Chelsea, Inga, Jack, Mika and Erik.

Today in music we learned a new game with a song from Ghana.  It included two sticks that you used with music.  Ms. Stephure did five beats with the sticks and by the time she got to five you had to have your body on the risers.  If you were not on the risers you were out of the game.

Jordan is the helper tomorrow.

Field trip Coming Up...

Today after guided reading we read another Oliver Jeffers story called " Up and Down".  We met at the small carpet to share some ideas about our weekend.  Mrs. Hamby showed us how to use an idea web to help us with our writing.  The middle of the web is the main topic and then the ideas around the web support the topic with one or two words.

Before recess we went to see the kindergarteners 100 day projects.  We kept working on our journals for a little while after recess.
In math this morning we continued to finish up our "show what you know" assessment for number counting patterns.

After lunch we practiced being Environmental Scientists.  We read s story called "Where the Forest Meets the Sea".  At the end of the story a tourist hotel had taken over this beautiful quiet, natural beach space where the boy had gone fishing with his dad and an old growth forest had existed.  As a class we made a T-chart of pros and cons for the tourist development. Then we looked at all the ideas we shared Friday about the human impacts on Whispering Woods.  Each small group was given one of the ideas and we had to talk about it together as a group and list the Pros and Cons for the idea.  We wrote them on chart paper in a T-chart.  We will continue this tomorrow.

We have been watching this video about taking care of the earth.  Our goal as Environmental scientists is to create change.

This afternoon Mrs. Kidd said we did a pretty good job remembering to bring our library books back.  Some of us are bringing home notices with book titles to look for at home.

Today in gym we were introduced to the Jungle Safari obstacle course.  We have to move through the course and try to do all the challenges at each station.  If we make a mistake we have to go back to the last red mat that we were at.  Some of the stations were tunnels, basketball hoops, balancing frisbees on our head as we walked across benches and many other challenges.  It was fun and we will get to try it again every day this week.

A field trip notice for the GlenbowMuseum is coming home today and is due back next Monday.

March 9th will be another spirit day at Dr. Coffin.  Kids are invited to wear a jersey or a Dr. Coffin
t-shirt on this day.

Our helper tomorrow is Madalynn.

Environmental Scientists

This morning we began to investigate the Whispering Woods through the eyes of an Environmental Scientist.  We talked about how the earth, people, plants and animals have a give and take relationship and how we often impact each other and create change, either positive or negative or a bit of both.

We also created a title page in our Fresh Air Friday Journals with the Title, Environmental Science.  We decorated them with ideas showing the interconnectedness between nature, animals and people and how our actions impact the earth and each other.

After that we read a story called "Window".  It is about a boy who as a baby looks out of his bedroom window and sees forest and trees.  Over time the view begins to change as a result of urbanization.  Eventually the trees are mostly gone and the boy who is now a grown up is looking out to the city.  The last page is a picture of the boy, now a grownup, looking out of a new window of a new house.  This house is looking out to a nice forested area.  We talked about what might happen in the future and what that man may be thinking about as he looks out of this window.

After the story we went outside to look for things that we might notice in Whispering Woods that would be the result of human impact on the woods.  We took pictures using Ipads of what we noticed.

We made a list:
- amphitheater
 -snapped branches
- cut trees
- pathways
- forts built with branches
- trampled down grass and plants
- signs
- small branches piled up for rabbits.
- protective snow pushed off the plants and trees

Here is our photo evidence that we captured

Anti-bullying T-shirt Designs

Maybe we should be T-shirt logo designers!

Our T-shirt designs from yesterday!

Today we painted using sponges to make a mural of the northern lights.  We had make the paper wet first so that the paint colors would run and blend together like the lights do when they are in the sky.

In math we continued to work on our show what you know assessment.  Those that were finished went out to the library or had a lap top to use Mathletics.

We went on a website today called Inuit name generator and we had to look for some names that we liked and tried to choose some names for the characters in our story. tWe will begin planning and writing our own stories next week.  It also showed us the meaning of the names so that we could consider that for our story ideas.

In gym today we had gymnastics stations and we rotated counter clockwise this time.

In word work today the grade twos had to finish finding their twenty words and then they had to work on the long O activity page. Grade ones had a spelling test of the 17" no excuse words".  We are bringing our tests home today to share with you.

In music today we played a leader game.  We had to sing a song and keep time as we were playing the game.  We had to keep switching the leaders.

We will be sending home a notice today so please check your chid's backpack for the green folder.
Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday.  Please come dressed for the weather as we will be doing some learning in Whispering Woods.  We will begin exploring as Environmental Scientists.

Poorvi is our helper on Monday.

Anti-bullying Day at Dr. Coffin

Today our Simon Fraser friends came and we made an anti-bullying paper shirt with them,  Our shirt had to have a message and a picture to go with the message.  We each had our own buddy.  We enjoyed it very much. Diego liked that his big buddy spoke Spanish with him.  Taiki liked that he knew his bug buddy from his church.  Inga liked that her big buddy looked like her because she also had blond hair.  Eric liked that his buddy was friends with his big sister.  Mika liked that her buddy was really good at drawing and art.  Solomon found out that his big buddy plays hockey.  Hailey's big buddy taught her how to do a secret handshake.  We like getting together with Simon Fraser buddies because they are older and know things that they can teach us and they can help us.  We had fun doing things together.

Today we worked on our Hide and Sneak story maps and also journal finish up.  We had to do knee to knee sharing with a partner.  Some of us are bringing our journals home for homework.
In math we continued to work on our show what you know math assessment.  In word work the grade ones worked on putting our no excuse words into sentences.  Grade twos continued to work on their secret word project.

In gym we worked on the climber and stations again.

Our helper tomorrow is Hailey.

Welcome Back from an extra long weekend...

Everyone was excited to see each other and tell about the exciting activities from the long weekend. This gave us great ideas to write about in our journals.  After guided reading we worked on our journals and had a mini lesson about how to make a hamburger paragraph.  The top part of the bun is the topic sentence.  The stuffing of the hamburger is each idea to support the topic sentence.  The bottom of the bun is the concluding sentence.  the grade twos have been practicing this but some of the grade ones tried it today

In word work the grade ones started practicing their no excuse spelling words.  We worked with a buddy and we tested each other to practice the words that we have been working on in word work time.  The grade twos tried to find another secret word.  We had to create words using certain letters and once we had 20 words we were given one clue.  The clue was that it ended with an A started with an A and the third letters was an S.  Some of us have figured it out.

This morning in math the grade ones and twos had to start an assessment to show what we know in counting patterns and number concepts.  Each grade had a different show what you know.

After lunch we read a story about the Northern lights called Aurora.   We read the story and talked about the Northern lights. We also watched a short video to show what creates the light show in the night sky.  We will begin creating a northern lights mural Wednesday, to go with our Inuksuks landscape.

This afternoon in gymnastics we got to start using the climber.  There was two ropes, a ladder, horizontal poles and ladders and rope ladders.  We had to follow dots to our next station.  We could move on when we were ready.

Tomorrow is Anti Bullying Day.  The students are encouraged to wear a white or pink shirt.  We will have some students coming from Simon Fraser to do some activities with us in the afternoon.

The helper tomorrow is Madalynn.

Wednesday, February 15th

After guided reading and centers this morning we worked on our Story maps for the story Hide and Sneak.  We are getting ready to start working on our own stories and this is good practice so that we can remember all the story elements for our won Arctic story.  We have been talking about problems and solutions that could happen in the arctic  and different types of arctic settings and characters.

After recess the grade ones had book time and the grade twos had word work.  In math we worked on trying to solve our drumming problem that we started on Monday.  The grade twos shared some strategies for adding up the minutes.  One strategy was to count up all the minutes of the first day, and then chunk the same numbers for the remaining days adding them all together at the end.  Another strategy was to add up the hundreds at the end and then add the 4 tens to make 840.

After lunch we worked in our teams to add to our Inuksuk Challenge.  We had to measure how tall and wide our Inukshuk was in centimeters.  We used meter sticks and if our Inukshuk was taler than the meter stick we learned how to measure and add the amounts together just by adding the extra amount to 100 cm. We also had to come up with the meaning of our Inukshuk and what the purpose would be.  We are getting better at working on teams and making better choices to help our groups.

In gym we had gymnastics stations.  Some of us got to share our routines.  After gym we came back to the room and had some "finishing up work time".

For sharing today Payton read us a story called "A Child Of Books", by Oliver Jerrers.

We don't have school again until next Tuesday.  Have a great extra long weekend!

Tuesday 14 February 2017

Happy Valentine's Day

Today was an exciting day!
This morning during guided reading we got to finish decorating and making our mailboxes for our Valentines.  After guided reading we read a story called Hid and Sneak.  This story is about a girl who gets lost on the Tundra in the Arctic when she is playing Hide and seek with an Ijiraq.  She ends up tricking the Ijiraq and then finding her way home by following an Inuksuk.  We started filling out a story map for this story but haven't finished yet.

After recess we met with our own class to brainstorm some friendship words.  We each had to choose 9 words to put on to our own bingo card.  When we had written the words and had our cards ready we played friendship bingo.

After lunch today we got to deliver our valentines cards.  Once the cards were all delivered we sat at our desks and opened all our mail.  We enjoyed seeing the messages and looking at all the cards.
Then it was time for us to go to music.  After music we had gymnastics stations.
We ended the day with a short movie called Be My Valentine Charlie Brown.

Monday 13 February 2017

This morning we worked on our journals.  The grade ones are trying to make sure that they use periods and lower case letters.  Grade twos are trying to add juicy words and ideas using simple paragraphs.

After recess we filled in speech bubbles telling about the "awesomeness" of Dr. Coffin School.  Some of our ideas will be on display in the front hallway soon please come in and see them.  In math today we worked on solving a problem.  The grade one problem was different than the grade two problem. Grade one:
Ms. Stephure had to sit in on 7 classes of drumming for four days last week.  How many classes all together?

Grade two:  Ms. Stephure had seven classes each day of drumming for 30 minutes each class, over four days.  How many minutes all together in four days?  We will work on them again tomorrow.

This afternoon we had library and Mrs. Kidd said she was really proud of us because most of us remembered to bring our books today.  Mrs. Kidd has an estimation jar of chocolates.  We got to put in our guesses.  We wonder who will win...
Today we had gymnastics stations again.  We had to work on making movement sentences.  Each sentence had to have a balance, roll, low/med/ high ways of moving and ending with a pose.

Tomorrow afternoon we will have a friendship celebration.  Please remember to send in valentines if your child is participating in a card exchange.  To get ready for this we made mailboxes for our cards this afternoon.  For our mailboxes we got to make animals out of heart shapes.  We called them "heartimals".  Tomorrow morning we will have a chance to finish decorating our mailboxes.

The helper tomorrow is Payton.

Drumming Performance Day

Today was our drumming performance.  We had a short practice before recess just to make sure that we had our rhythms down.   We performed at the beginning and then we got to watch all the other classes performances.  We really had a great week of drumming!

If you were not able to come to the performance we will try to have a video uploaded by next week. At this time the blog will not upload the video as it is to big.  We will try to work through it so that it can be posted next week.

This morning wee also worked on making our Inuksuks.  We built them and glued them onto paper and then created a snowy northern light background using chalk.  We will be displaying them and working them into a mural display this upcoming week.

Thursday 9 February 2017

Inuksuk Challenge

Today we worked on our story maps from Nutik and continued talking about story elements.  Soon we will be planning our own stories.

After recess we read the Lonely Inuksuk.  This story was written by a classroom of kids that live in Nunavut.  We also looked at a book about different types of Inuksuks and the various reasons for building them.  We discovered that they were built to show the way home; good hunting and fishing spots; to scare the caribou into a certain direction; as kayak and dog sled rests; to show a good view or to point the direction and also to show where there is a meat cache.

Before lunch we got to go and visit all the science fair projects set up in the gym.  There were some pretty neat projects!  The guest judges were in the school this afternoon.

After lunch we started working on our Inuksuk Challenge.  We were in teams of four.  Our Inuksuk that we will build out of paper rocks has to fit into some rules.
1. It can not be taller than the tallest person in our group.
2. It can not be wider than the shortest person in the group.
3. No rock can be longer than the tallest person's arm.
4. You must use between 6-12 rocks.

Once we had our teams we had to plan our Inuksuk and what we wanted it to look like.  We had to also plan who would be making which rocks.  We had to see who the tallest person was and the shortest person.  Once our plan was approved we got to start working on our rocks.

Tomorrow will be the drumming sharing assembly.  Please check the weekly school update for the time.

We are sending home a Valentine list in case your child is interested in writing Valentines for the class.  We will have a friendship celebration on Tuesday afternoon.

Drumming Day 3

In drumming we have been very busy getting our drumming rhythms ready for our drumming performance on Friday.  This is what we like about drumming so far...
"We get to play an elimination drumming game that's fun"
"I like that when we finish our drumming piece we get to pose"
"We get to use the really big drums and the smaller drums"
"We get to play some neat rhythms."
"We like the booming sound and the vibration of the drums in our bodies"
We will keep you in suspense till our performance on Friday...

This morning after guided reading and centers we had another story called "Nutik ,the Wolf Pup".
In this story a little boy and his sister come across some wolf pups on the arctic tundra and take them home.  The big sister warns her brother that when the pups are stronger they will have to go back to their wolf pack so he should not fall in love with the pup.  He named the pup Nutik.  In the end tNutik went back to the wolf pack but wanted the boy to stay with the wolf pack.  Amoraq, the boy could not.  Eventually the wolf pup came back to the boy to be his pet.  Once we finished reading the story we had to tell about the characters, setting, problem and story solution in a little chart.  We could fill out the chart using pictures and words.

After recess we had some word work and solo book time followed by math.  We had some time to go onto Mathletics today.  Many of us are working on practicing our addition and subtraction in the activities and also in Mathletics live.  Some of us like to race each other to see how fast we can be at knowing our basic facts.

This afternoon we had a finishing up work time to complete our arctic buddy reflections and journals. If we were finished we were allowed to make a quiet choice.
After this we went to gym.  In gym today we had four stations set up.  They were skipping, hoops, scoops and balls and bouncy balls/basket ball net.  We could choose the stations we wanted to go to.

At lunch today, it had warmed up enough that we got to go outside for some play time after we had eaten.  It was good to burn off some energy!

Our helper tomorrow is Chelsea.

Tuesday 7 February 2017

Drumming day 2

Today was our second day of drumming.  In drumming we started to work on putting together some rhythms for a song.   In drumming we worked more on inside and outside rhythms.  Inside means the middle of the drum and outside means the edge of the drum with half your hand on the drum and half off.  We played an elimination game to work on our timing of making sure that we stopped beating the drum when we needed to.  It is important so that our drumming stays together.

Today we were introduced to some Valentine centers.  These centers will be a choice in the morning during guided reading only if we are finished our journals and our Inuit History books.

In writing time today, we read the story called "A Promise is a Promise".  The reason that the Inuit told this tale was so that the children would be scared of going to the sea ice without their parents. They told tales to help them with lessons about their way of living in the Arctic.  We are getting ready to begin working on our own Arctic Tale.  Today we talked about story problems that could possibly happen in the arctic as well as the setting of the story.

We couldn't use the gym today because the grade five and six classes were working on a project with some university students.

In science today we worked on our Arctic Buddy reflections.  We had to share what each of us did in our group project work and also what we could do better next time when working as part of a team.  We came up with ideas of what being a good team member looks like.  We talked about it being a life skill that even adults have to be able to do.  Here is the list that we came up with:
1. Accept everyone's ideas.
2. Get the work done.
3. Think of others in the group and use thoughtful actions.
4. Be focused and work hard.
5. Include all group members.
6. Share smart, creative ideas.
7. Be a problem solver.
8. Share the work, don't make everyone else do all the work.
9. Be helpful.
10. Get along with your group, no fighting.

Great advice from some wise grade ones and twos...

One World Drumming

Today we started our drumming residency.  Our drumming teacher's name is Mr. K.  He taught us that different ways of drumming on the drum are named by letters of the alphabet.  We are looking forward to creating a song together.  One of the things we say to end our drumming is "Ooshaba". We learned that the drums were from West Africa.  They are made from tree wood and the top is made from goat skin.  We will have drumming all week with a sharing assembly on Friday.

We had gym before drumming.  This week we will be playing games for gym since we have to take a one week break from gymnastics.  This is because the gym is being used for other things.  We voted to play Dr. Dodgeball.  We got to give our ideas for games and the one that had the most votes is what we played.

This afternoon we also worked on our Arctic Buddy reflection.  We had to share what went well for our buddy project and what we would change for next time.  We had to think about the design, layers, materials used, fasteners, the top of the bottle and the seams of the bottle.  We still have to finish this reflection.

In math today we worked on our temperature problem.  Many of us have started solving the problem and moved on to the next challenge. We shared different strategies that we might use to help us solve the problem.

The problem went like this:
The temperature on planet Ookpik is usually 8 degrees.  It went up by 10 degrees each day for (10, 20 or 50 days) We got to choose how many days we wanted to have in our problem. What is the temperrature now on planet Ookpik?

Tomorrow is treat day.  Please remember to bring a quarter.

Our helper tomorrow is Trinity.

Test Day...

Today was our testing day for our Arctic buddies!  First we got a thermometer and tested the "body temperature" water.  Then we recorded it and left them outside for about 45 minutes.  We  checked  them again, recorded the temperature and then took them back outside. We tested them about an hour later and recorded one last time.  We noticed that the temperature of our Arctic buddies went down a little and for some of us it went down a lot but not below freezing.  It was a cold day outside.  The temperature was around -13.  If it went down a lot we should have used more warming materials.  If it went down a little we did a pretty good job!

After recess we tested to see if the buddy was waterproof.  We took a watering bucket and poured water over the arctic buddies onto their "clothes".  Then we took the layers off to see how wet they got.  We had to check to see which layers were wet and which layers were dry. We discovered that some of us had a dry arctic buddy, some were sort of wet and some were really wet.

In the afternoon we had to record some of our observations.  We didn't finish but we will work on it again next week. After science, we went to music.  After music we got to go to the grade five and six learning celebration in the gym.  They shared their learning about space and sky science.  The projects were really neat and we enjoyed looking at all the displays.  We thought they had really worked hard and had learned a lot!  We enjoyed seeing all the projects.

Just a reminder that tomorrow there is no school for students as this is a professional day

Our helper on Monday will be Cohen.

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday 1 February 2017

We started today with guided reading and centers.  Our center this morning was to work on finishing our Arctic Games page in our Inuit books.  After that we had to look back in our books to see if any other pages needed finishing up.

Today was Winter Walk day.  We walked all around the field and then we went down to the Whispering Woods and through the soccer field below and then back up through the woods.  It took us about 25 minutes and was almost 1 km.

In word work today the grade twos were trying to figure  out the secret word.  Some of the things we had to do was we had to figure out some three letter, four letter and five letter words.  When we got twenty words we could get a clue. On the strip of paper we had letters and we had to use all the letters from the strip.  Grade ones worked on writing our spelling words in  our neatest printing.

In math today it was our turn to go out to the computers and work on our number understanding using Mathletics. We are working on the strand of numeration and will begin to work on number operations as well.  This gives them an opportunity to practice these skills in a fun way. They enjoy helping each other and racing each other in Mathletics live if they choose to.

Today we finished building our arctic buddies.  We had to make sure that they were water tight and insulated for our test tomorrow.  Tomorrow we will test for insulation by taking the room temperature of the water in the bottles, putting them in the freezer and then checking them for temperature two more times throughout the morning.  After recess they will have a rain shower test!  We hope we did a good job!

In gym today we worked at the gymnastics stations.  After gym we came back to the room and had journal finishing time.

Tomorrow the helper is Diego.
