Arctic Buddy Building

This morning after guided reading we watched a video that showed us some more Arctic games.  We saw a traditional game called throat singing.  In this game they try to make each other laugh while they are humming and making sounds from their throats.  We also saw some games like back to back high kick, leg wrestling, seal hop and many others.  We started to record these traditional games onto the final page of the Inuit History Book.

After recess we had word work.  In grade one we are working on words from the "ap" word family. Also, the words: it, was, than and he.
In math today, we began working on our counting to 100 or 200 by tens cards.  Once we have finished these we will practice all our counting patterns and our cards will be kept on our own card ring.  We will also be using these cards for activities and games once we do addition and subtraction.

After lunch today we got to start working on building the layers for our arctic buddies.  We had to make sure that we followed our plans and gathered only the materials we had put on our plan.  Before we started Ms. Boyer put on her coat and we had to look at her and tell her where the heat from her body might be escaping or where the water might be able to come in during a rain shower.  We have to think about these things when we are building the layers on our arctic buddy.  We want to make sure that it is well insulated.
We went to music and then to gym.  In gym today we got to use equipment stations.  There was a ramp, box horse, climbing ladders and mats at each station.

Today the report cards go home.  Please sign the envelope and return it to the school.  The report card is for you to keep at home and does not need to be returned.
Tomorrow is Winter Walk Day.  Each class must spend at least twenty minutes going for a walk outside.  We will be walking in Whispering Woods and its pathways.

The helper tomorrow is Taiki.

Monday 30 January 2017

This morning we worked on our journals.  We reviewed our target to help us remember the journal expectations for grade one and grade two.  In math today we worked on a temperature problem.  We talked about some strategies to help us solve it and then we went to our desks to try and solve it on our own.  We will work on it again.

This afternoon we had library and most of us remembered to bring our books back today.  Mrs. Kidd was very happy.
Today in gymnastics we worked on a one point, two point and three point balance.  We ended by sharing some of our best balances.  Some of the grade twos helped us put the mats away at the end of gym time.  That will be the job of the grade twos.

This afternoon in science we finished up our arctic buddy plans with our groups.  We talked about fasteners for our buddies.  Fasteners help to hold things together.  The fastener choices were: tape, string, glue, elastic bands, paper clips, beads and toothpicks.  We had to have s title, labels and a picture of all the layers on our arctic buddy and we had to show fasteners.  Next we will be building and testing our arctic buddies for warmth and water resistance.

Today there is a Lunch lady form going home.
Our helper tomorrow is Logan and the new category is to bring a favorite book.

Arctic Games

Today we had our own version of the Arctic games.  We started by making the bone and stick game that is a traditional game the Inuit used to practice hunting skills.  We went to Whispering Woods and had to find a stick. Once we found a stick we had to come and get a string and then we tied a bone to the other end of the string.  The bone had a hole and we had to try and catch the bone on the stick through the hole.  We made 19 of these and then we used them at one of our Arctic stations.

We watched a video of the Labrador Winter games with the same events.  Then we got started!

We had three stations.  One station was "Tire d'erable" (maple taffy) We boiled maple syrup and then when it was hot you would put it onto the shaved snow.  This would cool it and then you roll the snow onto a stick.  It was yummy!

The second station was our version of the blanket toss.  In real life they use sanimal skins sewn together and they toss a person in to the air. We used mini parachutes and had to try and throw the ball up as high as we could.  The other thing that we did was we threw the ball from one mini parachute to another and the other group had to try and catch it.

The third station was an obstacle course like the "Labrathon" where we had to do the seal walk, sledding like a dog sled (our own version, of course no dogs) and snow shaving to fill a bucket with snow.

Arctic Buddies and a Big Pajama Party

This morning after guided reading we tested materials for our Arctic Buddy project.  We used water this time and tested for water resistance and absorbance. We noticed that the thick fleece and fabrics, stuffing and cotton balls, and paper and tissues soaked up the most water.  They would not help to keep our Arctic Buddy dry.  Once we finished testing we completed our recordings and then we met to have a discussion at the carpet.  We talked about layering our materials in a way that made sense for a cold and rainy day.

At lunch, it was a super Fun Lunch since we also got to wear our pajamas today!  We had Subway and some kids had pizza.  Thank you to all the volunteers that helped today.

This afternoon we made up our groups for Arctic Buddies. With 16 bottles and 47 kids we figured out that we would need 3 people in each group and one group would have two.  Our groups had to have grade one and grade two as well as a mixture of boys and girls.  We picked our groups and then we had to draw a plan of how we were going to "dress" our Arctic Buddy based on what we had discovered in our testing.  Our plan had to be drawn like a cross-section showing the layers with labels.

We also had music and then went outside for gym. The gym was being used by another class today with some special guests.

Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday.  Please make sure that your child comes with snow pants to be out learning in the snow tomorrow as they will be sitting and exploring in the snow.

P.J's and Fun LunchTomorrow!

This morning after guided reading and in our writing time we had to complete our science writing about our ice cream experiment and our balloon experiment.  We had to tell about what happened and why we think it happened.  For our ice cream experiment we had to tell where the heat was moving and then we had to tell what the salts job was in our experiment.
In word work today the grade twos had to finish their word chains and the grade ones worked on printing and practicing their spelling words using their neatest printing.
In math today we had to finish our math problems and also our counting by five recordings.  If we were done we got to go on to Mathletics.

This afternoon we started a new science project.  We were testing materials that we could use to keep our arctic buddies warm and dry.  An arctic buddy is a little water bottle full of water.  We are pretending that they are like people.  We are going to have to put things on them to keep them warm and dry outside. We will take the temperature before we put them outside and the temperature needs to stay the same or close to the same as when it is inside.  Some of the materials that we tested were: cotton balls, thick fleece and thin fleece, stuffing, wax paper, tin foil, paper, felt, paper towel and plastic.  We had to group the things into three categories.  The categories were; staying warm, staying dry and no thanks.   We ran out of time to test with water but we will do that tomorrow.

In gym we worked on the mats again and we talked about our safety check in gymnastics.  We have to take off our socks and shoes so we don't slip; we can't wear jewels, hoodies or loose baggy pants.

Tomorrow is fun lunch and pajama day.  Our helper is Eric.

Tuesday 24 January 2017

Today we started our day with guided reading and centers.  After that, we read a story called, "Look to the North; a wolf pup diary".  We worked on our Inuit History Books to complete any unfinished pages.  We only have one more topic left, arctic games.

After recess we had word work.  Here are the new words for the grade ones this week
1. in
2. you
3. to
4. is
5. man
6. can
7. ran
8. pan

After word work time we met at the carpet to share strategies for our Skip counting math problem that we started last week. After we reviewed some strategies we had to go and finish our problem.

After lunch we watched a video from Science on the Brain.  In the video they made ice cream just like we did.  We watched it to see what job the salt has when you make ice cream.  The man in the video also showed using a temperature probe that when you add salt to the ice, it makes the temperature colder and the cream freezes to make ice cream.  We had to finish recording our observations from making ice cream.

In gym today we started some work on mats.  We had cards at each mat and the cards showed us various balances and movements to try.  We moved around to the different stations.
In music we worked with rhythm sticks and also worked on a little song that we are writing with actions to go with it.

Our helper tomorrow is Yafet.

Friday 20 January 2017

Today we practiced being scientists again with a new outside experiment.  When we got to school we met with our big buddies and we shared our math skip counting game and then shared stories together.  While we were at big buddies Mrs. Smith used the pump to inflate a balloon for each of us.  After big buddies Mrs. Hamby and Ms. Boyer introduced us to the new experiment.  The question was; What will happen if we put the balloons outside and then bring them back inside again?
We made some predictions:
- It will pop.
-It will float away.
-The air outside will push on the balloon and make it shrink.
- The cold air will make the balloon deflate and the warm air inside will make it get bigger again.
-The balloon will freeze.

We used string to hang the balloons on the fence and then we went to do an ice village observation.
We discovered that the ice village had mostly melted away this week.
When we finished our observation and recording we left our balloons outside and we went in to have our snack.

After snack we went to get our balloons.  We discovered that they were still the same size.  When we brought them in we talked about what was supposed to happen based on other scientists that have done this experiment.  Why didn't ours deflate?  We think it is because they were in the sun and the sun was keeping the balloons warm enough that they didn't deflate and expand when we brought them inside.  Some of them popped when they came in and we think it is because there was just enough of a difference in the outdoor temperature and indoor temperature to make the balloon expand and pop!

*Reminder that on Monday is our field trip to Telus Sparks.  Make sure that your child has a simple lunch and is at school at 8:40.  The school bus will be leaving promptly after we have taken attendance at 9:00.

Making Ice cream

Today in science we worked to add our Before and After diagrams from our Ice cream experiment yesterday.  We talked about how the heat transferred from the cream to the ice cubes and then lowered the temperature of the cream to start the freezing process.  Some of us even remembered that big word, equilibrium. We are so smart!...

Reminder that tomorrow is fresh air Friday.  Please dress to be outside for most of the morning.
I wonder what the ice cream will be like?
This is taking a long time...
Here we go...
Hey, it's starting to freeze!
Shake, shake shake

Almost done!

Ice cream

This morning we worked on our Inuit history books.  We continued to work on adding food that the inuit hunt.  Isla found out they they also hunt and eat Muskox, walrus and moose.

We had word work and then math.  In math today we went on to Mathletics and practiced numbers to 100.  We are trying to get all the gold bars to show that we really know our number concepts.  Those of us that already finished got to go to Mathletics live to practice our adding and subtracting.  Mrs. Hamby was checking us to see if we know our counting patterns, skip counting by 2's and 5's.

Today we made ice cream!  It was one of our science experiments.  Here is how it works.  First we got a big plastic zip lock bag and we filled it with ice cubes.  We had a small zip loc and it had cream, sugar and vanilla in it.  We put salt into the big bag and the little bag went into the big bag with ice.  Our table group took turns passing it around and each person had a chance to shake it.  We shook it for about 15 minutes.

We noticed that the cream started to to feel harder and it was freezing.  The salt was making the ice melt and the water was filling up the bag.  The ice was taking heat away from the cream and it kept going till they were the same temperature.  The big word is equilibrium.   After gym we got to eat our science ice cream.  It was delicious!  I will add photos to the blog tomorrow as the external email is not working today for me to send the photos to import onto the blog.  Look for photos tomorrow...

In gym today we learned how to play Newcomb ball.  We will be playing that tomorrow again.

Today was Leo's birthday.  Happy Birthday Leo!

Tuesday 17 January 2017

Treat Day Today!

This morning during centers and guided reading time some of us had a chance to finish our Ice village observations from yesterday.  Center time is also a time where some of us have to finish up work from the day before.

Today we read a story about the arctic called Missuk's Secret.  After that we learned about the food that the Inuit hunted.  Some of the animals they hunted were were polar bears, Narwhal, caribou, seal, Bow head whales, Arctic Char and other fish, Ivory gulls for eggs and feathers and they gathered berries as well.  We added our new ideas to our Inuit History Books

After our Treat Day recess we had word work.
In word work today the grade twos made a word chain.  You had to choose either a long vowel or short vowel.  Each word you added to your chain had to have that vowel.  Grade ones had to practice writing out their words from this week using our neatest printing and making sure we had not upper case letters.

In math today we checked our understanding of counting by 5's.  We practiced on a recording sheet.  and we tried to practice by ourselves, if we needed help we could ask Mrs. Hamby or Mrs. Foster.  We had to try to complete the counting by 5's number lines.  Each question started at a different number and we had to complete the number line.  The grade one numbers went to 100 and some of the grade two numbers went to 1000.

This afternoon we looked at our water and salt experiment again.  We predicted that the fresh water would freeze first and it did.  We discussed why this happened.  We did a demonstration about how salt tries to push the water molecules apart and then it takes longer to freeze.  We had to answer a question about what the difference is between salt water and fresh water.

We had music and then gym. We played a game called Don't Throw Your Junk in My Backyard.  We used the volleyball nets as the fence for the yard.  We tried to have the least "junk" in our yard by throwing the balls over the net to the other yard.

Tomorrow the helper is Madalynn.

Monday 16 January 2017

Chinook melting...

This morning after guided reading we wrote in our journals about our weekends.  Most of us spent some time outside this past weekend enjoying some warmer weather.

After recess we had a short word work time and since Miss. Stephure is not here on Mondays the grade twos had solo book time.  The grade ones practiced some grade one spelling words and the "at" family review.  We are working on the words; and, the, that, of, this week.

Today in math we had a math problem that we needed to try and solve.  The problem was:

If you were going to make a counting by 5's game up to the number___________,
How many cards would you need?
We got to choose the number that we wanted to put into the line.  The grade ones and grade twos had different numbers.  We got to choose from an easy, medium or challenge number.
We shared a strategy at the carpet using the counting by 2's pattern.  We could use that strategy or we could choose one that made more sense to each of us.

This afternoon we went outside to see what the temperature and weather had been doing to our ice village.  We noticed that some of them had faded a bit; they were shinier and smoother and the edges had become more curved.  Some of them were bumpy and had cracks.  We had to record our observations in our ice village journals by using two sentence starters.  One was, I noticed that....  and the second one was, I think this happened because....
We also had to draw a picture of what we saw.

We had library and gym and finished our day with a little bit of finish u and then helper sharing.
Our helper tomorrow is Malik.
*Tomorrow is treat day so please send twenty five cents for a treat at recess if you would like your child to purchase one.

Friday 13 January 2017

Snow Shoeing

Today was a great day to be outside!  We started our day by sharing our Whispering Woods poetry books with our Big Buddies.  After that we went back to the classroom and we talked about our ice cube and salt experiment from yesterday.  We shared our observations and then recorded them on our recording sheets.  We added a part two to the experiment.  We filled two cups with water and then put salt into one of the cups.  Then we put it outside to see which one would freeze first.  At the end of the morning we looked at them and discovered that the one that had the salt still hadn't froze but the one that had plain water was almost frozen.  This will help us answer the question on Monday about the difference between salt water and fresh water.

After we finished our science recording we had our recess break and then met our big buddies for snow shoeing.  They helped us put on our snow shoes and then we got to practice with them around the sun circle area.  Once we were all ready we headed through the field and then down to the Whispering Woods.  Our bib buddies walked beside us.  We went around the  Whispering Woods and then to the field below the woods.  We were still able to find deep snow that had hardly any tracks on it.  After we spent some time in the field we came back up the hill and then our buddies helped us take the snow shoes off.  We sure had fun and it was really good exercise!

When we went inside we had some nice warm hot chocolate waiting for us!
What a perfect day!

Scientists Today

In writing time this morning we worked to finish our poetry books.  Those of us that had finished worked on our Inuit books.  We tried to complete all the pages up to the tools page.  We should have the transportation, shelter, clothing and tools pages all finished.  Next week we will be learning about food and recreation.

In math this morning we completed our counting by fives games and then we challenged some of our friends.  Grade one had to play the game counting to 50 by fives and grade two had to count to 100 by fives.  We raced each other putting the cards in order as fast as we could.  We are noticing that we are getting better at skip counting and knowing the patterns.  We are beginning to memorize the patterns.

This afternoon we did an experiment with salt and ice.  Our question was: What will happen  when we put salt  on the ice?
We made some predictions: The ice would melt; the salt will make the ice less slippery; salt will stick to the ice and slowly melt and some thought maybe nothing would happen.
Our procedure:
1.We had to  put a paper towel on our desk.
2. Next we put two ice cubes on the paper towel.
3. We had to put a pinch of salt on one ice cube.
4. Next we had to observe what the ice cubes did and compare them.
5.  Every five minutes we had to draw what we noticed.  We observed for 15 minutes.
This is what we noticed:
The salt made cavities in the ice.
The ice cube with salt melted faster than the ice cube with no salt.
The salt went down inside the ice cube.
At the end their was no salt left.
Tomorrow we will talk about our experiment and why these things happened.

In gym today we played volleyball dodgeball.  One team was on each side of the net and we had to throw the ball over to tag somebody with the ball.  Then we added that you could also roll the ball.  When a ball tagged you, it was your turn to go to the other side of the net.

Our helper on Monday is Freya.

*Tomorrow for Fresh Air Friday our bug buddies will be helping us learn how to snow shoe.  I need to make sure that I bring all my warm outdoor gear, including snow pants.

Wednesday 11 January 2017

Finally Some Time Outside

We started our morning today with a finishing up time.  Many of us had a science observation to finish.  If we were finished that, we were allowed to choose literacy centers.
This morning we finished adding the text to our poetry books.  When we were done we had to go and share it with a friend.  On Friday we will share them with our big buddies.

In math this morning we had to make sure that we were finished our skip counting by twos recording and if we were done we went to the computers to work on our Mathletics account.

This afternoon we got to go outside and arrange our ice blocks into a village.  Some of us joined ours together to make new sculptures.  Some people made a mansion, Saddledome, swimming pool with a diving board, movie theater and a power tower.  Some people made a family using their ice blocks others made a castle or the Calgary Tower We held the pieces together using water that would freeze between layers and we also used snow.  We wrote a letter to the school telling them about our village and asking them not to break or move our village.  We said that they could enjoy it but to please leave it alone.  We delivered the letter to each classroom and then we will also make an announcement tomorrow.

Today in gym we practiced overhand and underhand throws and serving over the volleyball net.  We are getting ready for some games next week.

After gym we came back to the classroom and we worked to complete our journals from Monday. Wednesday afternoon we always have 30 minutes to finish up our journals and then have journal sharing.  We ended our day with working on the blog together and then sharing.  Our helper tomorrow is Poorvi.

Enjoy some of our photos from the ice village!

Ice Village

Our Ice Village Project

We can hardly wait to see what will happen to our ice village.  Today we put our individual ice castles outside in the natureground.  It was -17.  Tomorrow we will go outside and make our village all together and move them to the places that we want them to be.  Today it was still pretty cold so we went out and put our ice castle in the Natureground and then came back inside.  We are going to be observing them over several weeks to see how the weather and the temperature impacts our village and the space around the village.  We will be recording our observations in our ice village journal. This is just the beginning of our experiment and now we will watch to see what happens.
We took the ice out of the containers today.

We started to create a village.
They looked really cool because we had more than one color!
Tomorrow we will go and move them around to make a village.
