Highlights

Math
In math today we worked on an adding and subtracting show what you know.  We also talked about many of the different strategies that people could try in order to get the answers to the equation.  We are getting ready to move into more of a focus on number operations in math.

Social Studies and Literacy
Today we had the second day of Arctic Station 2.  We continued to work on questions that people may have about the Arctic.  We had to write the question and then add the answer underneath the flap in our Arctic Folders.

Word work
Grade ones worked on the "op" word family words and grade two worked to finish some of their work on Nouns, verbs and adjectives.

Music
In music we practiced some of the belts in recorder Karate. We practiced green, orange and yellow. The green bet was called "It's raining". The yellow belt was called "Gently Sleep".  The orange belt is called "Merrily We Roll Along". We also played still waters at the end of music time.

Gym
In gym today we practiced accuracy with frisbees.  We practiced many different ways.  One way was to put the hoop against the wall and we had to try and hit it in the middle of the target.  The second way was to work with a partner.  The partner held a hoop over their head and we had to try and get the frisbee to fly through the hoop.  The third way we practiced was that got a new partner and we worked on throwing and catching.

The Great School Yard Cleanup , Inuksuk Building

Today we did our School Yard cleanup.  All the classes pitched in.  Room one was in charge of cleaning up the garbage in the fences all the way around the school.  We also watched a video about the Great Pacific Garbage patch.  It is twice the size of Texas.  We learned that it is important because garbage kills animals and destroys our home and the animals homes and habitats.  We each tried to make a promise to the earth that we would try to keep over this next year and then longer.

After the cleanup we went outside to the Natureground.  We built mini Inuksuks on the rocks with small stones and some bigger stones.  We took some photos of our day.

Our Visit With Saakokoto

Today we met Saakokoto in the Amphitheater of the Whispering Woods.  He shared some stories with us.  They were all stories that had bears in them.
The first story was called "The Seven Brothers".  The story is a Blackfoot tale that tells how the Big Dipper and the Bear end up in the sky together.  The oldest brother shot all his brothers into the air with an arrow, including himself.  He did this to escape the bear that was chasing them.  This bear happened to be their older sister.  Where they ended up in the sky is how the Big Dipper was formed.

The other story was about a bear and a turtle racing.  This explains why the bear hibernates in the winter.  It is because he is too embarrassed that the turtle beat him in the race.  We all know that the turtle cheated.  The turtle was mad that the bear was boasting about being the fastest and the best looking.

He shared that one of the signs of spring that he saw  a couple weeks ago east of Calgary, he saw about 50 or more eagles migrating back from winter away.  How exciting!  We also shared some of our stories of spring.  He calls all these signs Nature's Gifts to us.

Try not to use Saran Wrap or disposal plastic wrap.
Don't litter the scraps from your lunch.
Put all the food scraps into the compost.

Arctic Buddy Rain test

Because of the overnight snow we were only able to do one of the outdoor activities that we had planned today.  We had out Arctic Buddy rain shower outside.

Today was the day for our Arctic Buddy rain test.  We had ten minutes to do last minute repairs on our buddy.  After that we took the Arctic Buddies outside and then Mrs. Hamby took a big watering can and poured water over top of the Arctic Buddy.

After the rain shower we had to take our Arctic Buddy inside and we had to take off the layers one layer at a time.  As we took off each layer we had to check and see if the layer underneath was dry or wet.  We also had to record the results for each layer.  Once we got to the body of the Arctic Buddy we had to see if it was warm or dry.  We noticed that for many of then the side were dry but the bottom was wet.  Some of us had leaking in from the seams or at the top.  Next week we will be reflecting more on the results of our experiment and then recording what went well and what we would change.
