Thursday 22 March 2018

Today we worked mostly on our paperbag books, animal research and trying to finish our mathlmypic events .  It was our last day for Jungle Safari.  We were excited that everyone was able to finish the safari.

We will not choose a special helper until we get back from the break.

There will be no school tomorrow.
Enjoy your spring break with your family. Hopefully it will be restful and warm.  Have a happy Easter and don't be fooled on April first.

Mr. Fong's Last Practicum Day

This morning during guided reading Yafet and Mika were in charge of making a card for Mr. Fong's last day here.  They made sure that everyone got a small piece of paper to write a little message to him.  Mika made a little pocket to put all the messages into.  Yafet, Mika and Ahmad decorated the card and then Yafet made a big, big envelope.

At the end of the day we presented him with the card and then we invited him to come back whenever he wanted to.  He still has classes for three more weeks and then an exam.  We hope he comes back to help and to visit us
.

Just a Regular Day...

This morning we had guided reading followed by library.  After library we had some time to work on our paper bag books.  After recess we had Mathlympics.  Today we did our last event.  Tomorrow and Thursday we will have a chance to go back to some events and finish up or try to earn a higher medal.

This afternoon we started with animal research.  Here are some facts we have learned so far.
Did you know that...
There are three kind of wild dogs in North America.  They are the fox, wolf and coyote. -Ahmad
The mule deer because of the black tip on its tail is sometimes called the Black Tail Deer. - Avery
The moose has two layers of fur on its skin.  Enemies of the moose are bears, wolves and American badgers. - Mika
Did you know that the American badger is a carnivore that eats small animals and sometimes it will eat larger animals too. - Yafet.

In gym we had the Jungle Safari.  If you finish the whole safari you get to add your name to a poster. Tomorrow we will post some pictures from the Safari.  Many of us finished the Safari today and we get to try again.  If we finish it more than once we get to put a check mark beside our name.

Today Mr. O'Reilly was away so we had a guest teacher named Mrs. Lawrence.  She used to teach at CJP school.  We watched the very first, old Mickey Mouse video.  We also sang some songs.  They were grade one and grade two songs.  We read the words off of the smart board to sing along.

There is a notice coming home today that we need signed and returned before the break.  It will be for
CPaws coming to us after the break to do some bird watching with us.
Tomorrow the helper is Ahmad.

Jungle Safari and Aspen Wood Sketches

This morning we worked on our journals and also had guided reading before recess.

In math we had Mathlympics.  Tomorrow will be the last event.  After that we will have a chance to go back to some of the events and try to earn a medal or a higher medal.  Some of us have to finish the recording before we can get a medal.  When we have earned at least one medal for each, we can try to do the closing ceremonies.

This afternoon we worked on our Aspen Woods Landscape.  We had to add the color using chalk pastels.  We started with white or tan for all the trees.  Next we added the snow followed by the sky.  The last thing we added was the black to the trees.  We used black last so that we didn't smudge black all over our picture.  Finally we used our finger to blend the chalk and soften the color.

Today in gym we got to start the Jungle Safari.  Mrs. Polski came in and explained the rules for the Jungle.  Between each station We have to make sure that we walk on the green lines which are the vines.  If our feet come off we have to go back to the beginning.

Treat Day is tomorrow and Gavin is the helper tomorrow.

Landscape sketching in the Woods

Today we went to Whispering Woods to sketch a landscape drawing of the Woods.  We talked about using the horizon line, foreground, middle and background, artist perspective and what the artist wants the audience to notice and how they draw attention to that in the painting.  We looked at examples of how artists show that in paintings.  Then we went outside to choose our perspective.  We could choose from three locations, the amphitheater, the bottom of the hill or the side of the hill looking at the woods.  We had to sit in our own space and then draw what we saw from our perspective.

After our sketch we came in for a short recess and then we did our weekly Athletics medal count.  Each country had to count up their total medals for each color and then fill in their country's graph on the poster.  Each country also had to figure out what their total medal count.

We ended our morning by going outside to play Camouflage.  It was amazing that we could hide in the woods even though we had colorful winter clothing!  It was a beautiful morning outside today.
Have a great Weekend!

Can you spot the woodpecker?

Climbing Wall Pictures

Today was a rinse and repeat of yesterday.  We worked on our book and research projects and also Mathlympics.

Today we got to try the climbing wall again.  We went over the rules again and Mrs. Polski also gave the teachers a lesson about the climbing wall.
Nicholas:  I like the climbing wall because we move across it instead of climbing up it.
Elaina:  We can have fun on it and enjoy climbing on it.  Having fun is one of the rules!  Some kids
did a tennis station and then we switched.
Satvik:  The hard thing about the climbing wall is trying to reach to some of the higher hand holds.
Loti:  This was our second time and it was so much fun!

Next week the climbing wall will be part of the Jungle Safari.

Climbing Wall

Today we started our day with centers and guided reading. After guided reading we worked on our Paper bag Books.   The kids that still had their family writing to finish worked with Mr. Fong.  The others went onto the computer to type up their ideas about themselves.

After recess we did Mathlympics.  Today the event that Elaina, Loti, Nicholas and Satvik went to was Figure Skating.  Figure Skating is like curling because you have to add up all your points.  You earn points by picking up a card and performing the move.  Each move has points.  To get a bronze we have to earn 50 points, silver is 100 and gold is 150.  You can also lose the  points if the card says that you fell or had a deduction.  The most points you can get for a move is 20 points.

This afternoon we started with our animal research.  After animal research we had finish up time.  For finish up time today we had to have our family writing completed and glued in our books.

In gym today we got to try the climbing wall.  First, Mrs. Hamby had to go over all the rules and expectations for the wall.  After that we had to move along the wall from end to end using just our hands on the wall and our feet still on the ground.  Next we got to try hands and feet both on the wall.    We have t move across the wall and not up to the top.  There is a red climbing line that shows us how high we can put our feet.  Our hands can go anywhere that we feel comfortable putting them.

I will post a picture tomorrow of the wall tomorrow.
Maria is the helper tomorrow.

Animal Research and Mathlympics

This morning we had guided reading, library and we worked on our All About Me books.  After recess we had Mathlympics.

This shows what our Medal Count Tracking page looks like and it also has the recording page for Speed skating.  Each event has a bronze, silver and gold task to accomplish.  We can decide how far we want to go or how much time we have to complete the tasks that determines our medal.  Each event also has a recording page in our booklet.

At the end of each week our country has to count up its medals and then graph each color.  Each Friday we also do a total medal count.

This afternoon we worked on our animal research.  Before we started we each shared some facts we have learned about the animal we are researching.
Did you know....
Nicholas- that Red Foxes eat voles.
Elaina- that Red Foxes eat eggs and berries if they can't find meat.
Satvik- that the little brown bat eats hundreds of insects a day.
Loti- That white tailed deer turns brownish in the summer and grayish in the fall.

Here are some of the animals and facts that some of us have recorded so far.
