Story Writing, Nova Scotia, Blue Nose Painting

Reminders:
-Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday so please make sure your child is dressed to be outside.
- Please send in boat making supplies by tomorrow.

Learning Highlights:

- Today in story writing we talked about story beginnings.  We worked together to come up with some good story beginnings for our Arctic stories.  We can also choose to write a different beginning.  Here are the ideas that we came up with:

- We worked on our sketch and began our watercolor painting of the Blue Nose Schooner.  Some of us are still working on the sketches.  We are pretty excited about how they are turning out!

The Blue Nose Schooner

Wednesday 29 May 2019

Highlights:
-  This morning at center time we got to start our Nova Scotia goggle slides or pamphlets.  The information we have to include is on the chart.  Mrs. Hamby included what we have to type in as our search question.  We are allowed to work alone or with a partner.

- We also worked on our story writing and making our puppets to practice telling or stories.  Once we have practiced telling our story three times we move on to Friends and Feedback.  We have to share our story with 5 friends and then ask them for feedback.  Once we have all our feedback we need to try and incorporate some of the feedback into our story to improve it.

- In math today Mrs. Hamby's group worked on domino addition using a game called Clockonimos.  Each player has a game board with twelve spaces that look like the clock numbers .  They take turns turning over a domino and add up the sum.  If that space is not filled yet they add it to their clock.  The first person to fill up the clock wins the game.  Mrs. Armour's group and Mrs. Yoon's group continued their work with building and adding numbers using the place value mats and blocks.

- In the afternoon we began to work on the sketches for our Blue Nose water color painting.  Some still had to add labels to the Blue Nose in their art journal.  Tomorrow we will begin working on our water color painting.

- In gym we worked in teams of three using lacrosse sticks and a ball.  We played keep away with another team of three.

Reminders:
- Please continue to send in boat supplies for this Friday.

- Our new category for our last sharing is to bring something special to show to the class project.

Coffin Cares Assembly, Story writing, The Blue Nose

Learning Highlights:

We started off our morning with a Coffin Cares Assembly.  Today we were recognizing those that show extra care at Coffin School in taking care of the environment and natural spaces around our school.  We also recognized all the hard work that the Green Team does at  helping us be a green school.

After our assembly we worked on our story planning.  Some of us moved on to making puppets today to practice telling and retelling our stories.  Mrs Hamby told two stories, one with hardly any details and one with lots of details and sounded more like a story.  It helped us make a movie in our head as she told the story.  We really noticed the difference!

In math today Mrs. Hamby's group worked on finishing up their adding doubles flip books.  Mrs. Armour's group worked on building numbers using a place value mat and the tens and ones sticks and blocks.  Mrs. Yoon's group worked on using the blocks and tens sticks to add two digit numbers together.  They even tried some triple digit numbers!

This afternoon we worked on our Blue Nose sketches and adding the labels for all the parts of the boat.

In gym we had fitness stations outside.  We rotated to five stations.

Reminders:
Tomorrow they will be seeing treats again at recess time.

Weeding, Preparing the Sun Circle for Planting and Boat Building Training Day 3

Today room one went to the sun circle to get the planters ready for planting our garden.  We weeded out the weeds by using a trowel and once the weeds were out we used a hand rake to smooth out the soil and loosen it up.  We are hoping to plant our vegetable garden in the next week or two.

After that we found a dandelion patch and began picking and pulling dandelion flowers and roots.
The portable weeded the amphitheater and room 2 was in the Natureground.

Today for boat building training our challenge was to take a clump of plasticine that was already portioned out and we had to make it float.  We had to keep working with the design and shape until we could get it to float.  We took buckets out to the sun circle so that we could test and redesign and then request with out worrying about the water spilling over.  Once we could get it to float we could add rocks to see if it could hold weight or we could work to create other shapes and see if it would still float.  We are bringing home the plasticine to see if a family member can take on the challenge!

We also worked on our sketch of the Blue Nose Schooner and began to label the parts of the boat.

Fun Lunch Today

Thank you to the volunteers that came to help out today with our fun lunch.

Reminders:
- Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday.  We will be doing some weeding as well as continuing our investigation boat making and buoyancy.

Learning Highlights:
- This morning we worked on adding more details to our story maps.  This week our focus is on the 3 events in our story string.  Next week we will be making puppets of our characters so that we can rehearse telling the story before we begin to write it.  This helps us to build in extra details and to make sure that the events in the story make sense before we try to write everything down.

- In word work, the grade two have been working on editing skills.  Today they had to edit a paragraph that Mrs. Hamby had written.  They had to use yellow for punctuation.  We used red for spelling corrections and blue for adding details and descriptive words (adjectives).  Grade ones had reading time, solo book time.

- In math, Mrs. Hamby's group worked on making their adding doubles flip book.  Mrs. Armour's group worked on adding doubles (twins), number families (Number house family) and using the strategy of counting on.  In Mrs. Yoon's math group they worked on reviewing some of the work they have been doing using the ones and tens blocks to show numbers to 99.  We also had to add numbers using the blocks.

In social studies, we looked at the Blue Nose Schooner since it is a very famous schooner that was made in Nova Scotia.  Since we are also going to be boat builders it makes sense for us to look at how boats are made, parts of boats and some research about boats.  We began a sketch of the Blue Nose.  We talked about the bow, stern, starboard and Port side of the boat.

- In gym we played a running game outside called Ships Ahoy.  It involved lots of running and following commands as well as trying to remember the parts of the ship.
- In music we used our recorders and worked on recorder karate.  We got to take our recorders outside to play in our own spaces on the compound.  Some even passed one or two belts today.
