Friday 24 June 2016

Today we had our Fresh Air Friday assembly and celebration.  We walked to Nose Hill and we had a giant picnic with the whole school.  We walked with our buddies and then we got to do some activity stations.

The stations were:
Face painting
Bug catching using bug boxes to look at them and then let them go.
Bubble blowing
Making God's Eyes
Making Friendship  Bracelets.
At 11:30 we walked back to the school.

We thought the centers were lots of fun, especially face painting and bugs.  Some of us even enjoyed the walk.  We even walked faster than our big buddies, and they were tired and we were not.

Today we are bringing home two of the photographs that we took with the photographer and some of the things we made at our stations today.   Have a great weekend!  There will still be classes on Monday and Tuesday.

Tomorrow morning we will be going to Nose Hill as part of our project work this year.  We will be meeting a representative from the City of Calgary and we will be helping to seed a small area of the hill.  This is all part of the programs that they have to keep the Native species growing and populated on Nose Hill.  We will be leaving shortly after the morning bell.  Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather and has a simple snack to take along.  We will be returning before lunch.

Today we started our End of the School Year Memory Books.  In music, we watched some of the Sound Of Music movie .  We got to sing along with the songs.    We had a Public Library Presentation about their summer reading program.  We will be bringing home a bookmark with some of the information.  There will also be contests to win!  Some of us got our laminated and coiled stories to take home today.  We will be working on the other one's this week too.  Today in gym we played kickball.  We started outside but then it began to spit rain and so we all went inside to play it in the gym.

Monday 20 June 2016

This morning we had a kindergarten switch.  The grade two students went with Mrs. Wilkens and went outside to play camouflage in Whispering Woods, and then they went inside to do some drawing. The grade one's worked with a kindergarten buddy to make symmetrical butterflies using paint.  We had to put spots of paint on the paper and then we folded it down the fold line and moved the paint around. Then we opened it up to see what it looked like.  We got to move our desks into a U-shape for the last week of school.  We could sit beside anyone we wanted to.

Today many of us finished our Calgary buildings.  Some of them are: Christ Church, The Grain Exchange, Colonel Walker School, King Edward School, CP Rail station, Bow River Pumphouse, Alberta Grocery,  Lancaster Building, L.H. Doll Building, FireHall One and Two, The Anderson Apartment, Hudson's Bay Company, Sait, Old CIty Hall and The Palliser Hotel.

Friday 17 June 2016

Today we went to Nose Hill with Jaclyn and Alex and Laura from CPAWS.  We learned about some of the wild animals like porcupine, coyotes, white tail deer and Richardson Ground Squirrel.  We played two games.  One game we had to be ground squirrels hiding from the owls, our predator and in the other game the porcupines had to hide from the coyotes.  As we crossed the bridge some of us saw a white tailed deer. We found some evidence of porcupines chewing on the Silverberry bushes.  The First Nations used to use the berries for Jewelry.   Jaclyn's favorite animal is the porcupine.   Alex's favorite animal is a grizzly bear and he told us that they used to roam on Nose Hill along with Buffalo.  They would eat the Buffalo Berry bush berries. We learned that the Wild Rose bush flowers can be eaten in salads and that you can use the berries for tea.  We ended by singing our Beautiful Day song for them and then shared our animal facts to them.

Next Thursday afternoon at 2:00 will be the room 1 and 2 assembly.   We have been busy today making sets for our assembly.  First we had to draw the scene on our trifold.  The second step was that we painted green for the grasses and blue for the sky. We used sponges to add the clouds.  We also used special paint to add the smaller details of plants and trees and bushes. We worked on it most of the morning and some of the afternoon.  After we finished our sets we got to go to the library and work on the computers.
Today in music we marked our animal test. In the test we had to listen to Carnival of the Animals.

Just a reminder that tomorrow there will be no school.

We are excited about our field trip to Heritage park this Wednesday.   We have been preparing to go by learning about some special buildings in Calgary Long ago.  Some kids today used their free time ticket from sports day during book time.  We had lots of time to work in our journals today. We had some exciting ideas to share about the weekend.  Many kids wrote about going camping this  past weekend.  Today we played with lacrosse equipment for our gym time outside.  We practiced using the overhand throw for a longer distance to our buddies.  In math today the Ms. Boyer's grouped practiced subtracting using the place value mats and Mrs. Hamby's group worked on writing their own number story problems.  Tomorrow we will exchange them with a friend and see if we can solve the problem.
Swimming report cards are coming home today.

Tomorrow is bike to school.  This is optional, of course.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • 2.     Students will be invited to store their bikes in the gym for that day. Please make sure that your child’s bike is labeled with their name and classroom number.

  • 3.     As this ride will be occurring before school hours and is considered transportation to school there will not be teacher supervision.  Parents and caregivers are responsible for the safety of their children.

Thursday 2 June 2016

Tomorrow will be our Sports day.   We have divided the kids into two color teams.  If they would like they can wear the color of their team tomorrow.  All the students in room one will be on the green team.  Please make sure that your child is wearing sneakers as there will be many activities involving running or jumping and comfortable shoes will be important.  A labeled water bottle would also be a great idea.
