Wednesday 31 January 2018

This morning we worked on our family writing and a few of us still needed to finish our puppets.  When the writing is finished we have to show it to Mrs.
Hamby and then we get to start making our book.

In Math we worked on finishing up our pattern tubs.  We have to have five patterns for each tub.  The grade twos have to have at least one growing pattern in each tub.  Tomorrow will be a finishing day for those that still need to finish.

This afternoon we started looking at the images of all the mammals on Nose hill.  We marked the animals we were interested in with a little star.  Maria thought the long tailed weasel looked interesting.  Muhammed thinks the bats and the deer were cool!  Levi liked the lynx and Iain really liked the striped skunk.  Tomorrow we will finish our list, choose our animal and then print off a picture of the animal that we chose.

In gym this afternoon we got to try movement and balance cards.  We could do individual moves or partner moves.  The partner moves were fun.  Some of the moves we tried were the piggy back and the wheel barrow.

Our helper tomorrow is Elaina.

Animal Research

This morning Mrs. Hamby showed us the paper bag books.  Some of us began adding our family writing and puppets into our books.  The puppets went into a pocket and the book has flaps too.  They are really cool!  We also got to use fancy scissors to make interesting edges on our frames and special scrapbooking paper to add backgrounds to our pieces of writing.

Today we started our work on getting ready to choose a Nose Hill Mammal that we would like to research.  We looked at a website called "Friends of Nose Hill".  On that website they have all this information about the hill.  Did you know that Nose Hill has five different types of bats?  We each got a copy of the list and now we are going to look up images of each animal on Google. Then we will create a short list of the ones that we might be interested in.  Then we will choose only one from the short list.   We are working on the computers with a partner. Today we had music so we did't have enough time to go on the computers but we will tomorrow.

In music,  we played Doggie, Doggie Where's your Bone?  We got to teach Mr. O'Reilly how to play the game.  We learned how sound effects and music works in movies. The music and sound gets orchestrated into the movie to go with what the person is doing.

In gym today we had to do a routine called meet in middle.  We worked with a friend and we had to start with a balance pose, then a roll to meet in the middle of the mat and then we had to do a shared balance where our bodies were touching.

Our helper tomorrow is Nicholaus and our new category is to bring something that is special to him.

We had two volunteers, Mickey and Nadine, that are able to consistently volunteer on Mondays for Homereading.  We will add Mondays to our Homereading schedule beginning next week.

Gymnastics Started Today

Today was a typical Monday.  Before we began to work on our journals Mrs. Hamby showed us how to add more details by using an idea web and trying to write about the five "W's", who, what, where, when and why.  The grade ones were trying to think about one of the activities they did over the weekend and then build a sentence around each of the 5 W's".  The grade twos were told to try and build two paragraphs around two different activities.  Another sentence that they were encouraged to add was an, "After that...",  sentence to tell about how the activity concluded.

Today in word work the grade ones practiced the new word family "ack"  words.  This week the words are back, snack, black and sack and the sight words are: for, on, are, as.  The grade twos will be working with homophones.  We will start with  to, too and two this week and begin the use them in a variety of contexts within our sentence writing.

This afternoon we played our animal clues game.  We had a short practice time with our group and then we shared clues to see if we could guess the animals.  See if you can guess!

Tomorrow we will begin to look at animals from Nose Hill that we may be interested in researching. Can you help me think of five animals that might be on Nose Hill?  Mrs. Hamby said they have a two page list to choose from.  Wow!  That's a lot of animals.

In gym today we began our gymnastics unit.  We had to do a safety check which involved making sure that we had no jewelry, strings hanging or loose clothing.  After that we had to do a one point, two point or three point balance as well as moving high or low in a variety of ways.  We practiced different types of one point balances and tried holding them for at least five seconds.  You may be challenged tonight to perform one of these balances!

Report Cards Today

Today we have had a finishing up  kind of day.  We have been working on several projects for a period of time now and we are beginning to come to the end of some of these pieces.  Our paper bags have come in and we are now able to sew together our paper bag books for the books they are making about themselves.  Our recent writing projects will be part of that book.

In science, we are coming to the end of our animal clues project.  Today they will work on the posters and then next week will present their animal clues to the class to see if their classmates can guess the animal. We will hang the clues in the hallway, in case you have time to come and try the game for yourself!   Once this is complete, we will begin to work on individual animal research.  We will be focusing on Nose Hill animals for our research.  We are hoping for nice weather for the next Fresh air Friday so that we can go to Nose Hill to look for animal clues.

In gym today we played Newcomb ball and next week we will begin Gymnastics.

*Many of our grade one and two students have been away due to illness.  We have had a conversation at school about hand washing, sneezing, and using tissues for your nose.  Please reinforce this conversation at home.

Report cards have come home today please check your child's backpack and only the signed envelope must be returned to me.
A very big thank you to Aksel and his grandma for the gift of jelly's that came home today with the report cards.  Se wanted to  give the grade ones and twos a gift for all their hard work.

This may be helpful n your conversation with your child regarding their report card.  We had a conversation together in class before the report cards came home today.

Tomorrow is a PD day so there will be no classes.  Enjoy a long weekend!

If Solomon is feeling better, we hope he will be,  he will be the helper on Monday.

Today was the kind of day where we continued on in our work and didn't start anything new.  We have lots of kids that are excited about sharing poems and even trying to write their own poems to share.  Some are rhyming poems and some are "Free Verse".

In music today we played percussion instruments.  We had to try and hear the tone of the music.  A tone is like the sound of a note.  Tones can be low or high.  We got to play hand bells, jambay drums, xylophones, finger drum, jingle bells, tambourine, maracas,  and sand blocks,  We also played many more.  We all played different instruments.  We listened to some other instruments on the smart board too.

In gym today we played volleyball with a beach ball.  We had t keep it from touching the ground.  There was a team on each side of the net.  The second game we played was volleyball dodgeball.  You could either through the ball over the net or roll it under.  If you got hit then you had to switch to the other side.

Our helper tomorrow is  Levi.

Monday 22 January 2018

This morning we started with our journal pictures during guided reading time.  After guided reading we practiced editing on Mrs. Hamby's journal entry.  Today we had to do an edit after we finished our own journals.  Grade ones had to look their writing over for upper case letters in the wrong spots and then fix them.  Grade twos had to look for periods at the end of sentences and upper case to begin a sentence and  no capital letters in the middle.  We worked on journals till recess.

In word work today the grade ones worked on the "ap" family words.  They are: map, cap, nap, and tap.  The sight words are: was, he, than, it.  Grade twos worked on adding to their long vowels and short vowels today   They also added a small rebel words section to their page.

In math today we worked on pattern tubs.  We only have one tub left before we start our second round.  The expectation will be that we have five patterns completed from each tub.

This afternoon we worked on our animal clues.  Some people are typing the clues and some other people are already working on the poster ideas.

In gym today we we played a game with a partner.  You had to throw the ball over the net and your partner had to catch it with no bounces or one bounce.  If you caught it with no bounces you got 2 points and one bounce was 1 point.  You could have two tries to get it over the net.  We are getting ready to play Newcomb ball.

 Iain is the helper tomorrow.

Treat day tomorrow.

Drumming Day Three

This morning Mr. Fong joined our class for the day. He is a practicum student from Mount Royal.  He will be with us every Wednesday for the full day until April.  We are very excited to have him here.

This morning when we worked on our family puppets, some of us started writing about the people in our family.  We will have to write about each person.  We had to think of three things we would write.  Some ideas that we came up with were: name, age, favorites, hobbies, things we do together, friends and talents.  Some of us are still working on our puppets.  If you would like to share some ideas for writing together and send some ideas on a piece of paper with your child that would be very helpful.

In math today we had our patterning math stations.  We had to go to a new station today and we had to make sure that we looked at the pattern checklist to see if our job was done.  We also played a game where Mrs. Hamby played a pattern on the drum and we had to listen and tell if it was a repeating pattern or a growing pattern.

This afternoon we worked on our animal clues We worked in our group  and continued to try and find clues to go into each of the animal categories.  Before we started we talked about how a good clue would look and how a great clue would look.  We noticed that a great clue is very specific and that an okay clue is very general.

Drumming
In drumming today we played a new game.  Ask me about our 4-4--free game.
At the end of drumming we played a short game where as soon and we heard him play "chocolate milk and potato chips", we had to switch spots with a friend before he counted to nine.

After drumming today Mrs. Bigelow took us outside for gym.  She is Ms. Boyer's sub today.  Mrs. Hamby had a meeting with Mr. Fong.

*Fun lunch tomorrow
Tomorrow the helper is Elaina.

Tuesday 16 January 2018

Drumming Day Two

Our Schedule today was:
Guided Reading
Before guided reading Mrs. Hamby introduced three poetry choices for literacy centers.  They are copying poems, creating poems and performing poems.  We had to make a poetry ring with a card for each of these centers. Each time we complete one of these poetry activities and share them with the class or show her, we get a punch on our card.  So if we perform a poem she will hole punch the card that says perform.  Once we have five hole punches on one card we get to make a button with a button maker.  We make the decal and the teachers make the buttons.
Library
Writing Time - We worked on finishing our family puppets.
Recess
Word work- Grade twos learned about how the "E" on the end of a word makes the vowel say its name.  Grade ones worked on word practice of the "an" family.
Math Stations- Today we started working on our math stations.  Here is our checklist for each station.

Lunch
Science Color Show What You Know finish up
Drumming
Gym - Outside

Drumming today:

We learned big letter "B" and little letter "b", go and doe. -Gavin
I like how I got the points in our game today, we had to make shapes on our drum with our fingers. - Levi
Today Mr. O'Reilly was with us and he drummed with a different kind of drum and he had a different beat. - Mika
Mrs.Foster also had a different drum and bigger than Mr. O'Reilly's - .Elaina
We learned how to do big A and small b together. - Ahmad
Iain enjoyed playing the game today.
Satvik enjoyed playing the game as well.  He was happy that the kids won.

We ended our day by going outside.  It was so nice and warm.  A perfect way to end a busy day!

Monday 15 January 2018

First Day of Drumming

This morning when we worked in our journals we talked about ways that we can improve our journal writing.  Here are some of the things we talked about:
- Using upper case letters only to begin a sentence or for a name.
-Ending our ideas with periods.
- Using finger spaces between out words.
- Making out ideas interesting by trying to use describing words.
- Adding details by thinking about the five "W's", Who, What, Where, When and Why.
In word work this week the grade ones are practicing the "an" word family.  The four sight words we are practicing are to, in, is, and you.  The grade twos are still working on long and short vowels.

In Math, Mrs. Hamby introduced us to some pattern math tub activities.  They are for us to practice making many different types of patterns.  We will be using shapes, snap cubes, actions, xylophones and beads. We need to make repeating patterns and growing patterns.  we will be recording our work in our math journals. We will begin those tomorrow.

Drumming Day One
We had a new teacher in drumming this time.  His name is Robert.
In drumming we played a game.  We had to follow the teacher and if we do something wrong he gets one point and if he does something wrong we get two points.  We won with two points!
He taught us about the drumming alphabet.  Goon is the is the upper case "A" and doon is the lower case "a".
The type of drum that we played was a Jumbay, it is from west Africa and it is a hand drum.
He showed us another type of drum that was a finger drum.
The hand drum had a lot of wood on it like a stand and the finger drum only had a ring of wood.  The hand drum was very heavy.  The finger drum was bigger but very light.
The people who live in the desert have a hand drum and the people who live in the jungle have the hand drums.  The people in the jungle have the hand drum because they have a lot of trees to make the drums.  The nomads in the desert don' t have a lot of trees to choose from and finger drums are light and easy to move.

Our favorite parts of drumming today:
Gavin - Different drums make different sounds.
Mika - The game because I like tricking people.  The drumming rhythms were fun too.
Iain -  The game where he tried to trick us.
Levi - The game because it was fun.  I also liked the drumming beat.
Ahmad - the game  because we could get points.  I like that the drums make different sounds.
Elaina - The game because I like tricking people. The drumming alphabet was neat too.
Satvik - It was fun when we won the game.  I also like the drumming alphabet.

Joel is the helper tomorrow.

Guess Who? Animal Clues

This morning we began the day with our big buddies.  We got to share some stories together and then we got to choose an activity to do together.  Some of us played games and some of us drew pictures together.

When big buddy time was over the grade ones and two met at the carpet and we talked about what a zoologist studies.  Mrs. Hamby read a story called Honey Paw and Lightfoot.  It is a story about a mother bear and her cub.  We had to listen to the story and think about what kinds of things a zoologist would need to research to find out about bears.

We made a list.  From this list we created categories that we would have to use to research a mammal for a game called Guess Who?  The categories are shown below.

We played the game using clues that Mrs. Hamby and Ms. Boyer had found and we had to guess the animals that those clues described.

Mrs.Hamby found these clues when she was out snowshoeing last weekend.  Can you guess what it is from?

After that we had to work in groups to create our own clues about an animal.  Our group had to draw an animal name out of a bag and then choose a book from the table to help us find the information that we would need to begin to write our clues.  Mrs. Hamby had already gathered all the books from the library for us that we would need.

Can you guess?

When we are finished out project will be a poster with all the clues on it and then the animal picture hidden underneath.  We will have to work as a group to finish this.  Once they are all done we will hang them on the wall in the hallway so that people can play the game.

Reminders*  Leo is the helper on Monday
Our drumming residency begins on Monday.  They will have 30 minutes each afternoon with a drumming performance on Friday morning.

Thursday 11 January 2018

This morning after guided reading we continued our work about our family.  Our goal was to complete our puppets of our family members even though many of us still need to finish.  Next week the students that have finished their puppets will move on to write a little "blurb" about each family member.  Some ideas that we had talked about have been the person's name, age, where they were born, what they like to do or something interesting about that family member.  Feel free to share some ideas at home and have your child bring those ideas on a piece of paper to help them out.

After recess the grade one's had word work with Mrs. Hamby and we reviewed and practiced the words from the "at" family.  We even added some challenge words such as flat and splat.  We used the "stretchy snake" strategy where you stretch out the word to try and hear each sound.  We also practice this strategy in our guided reading.  The grade two's worked on their long and short vowel challenge.

In math, we started by playing a game where we had to guess if a pattern was repeating or growing.  Mrs. Hamby made some and we got to make some too. We are getting better at making and recognizing both types of patterns. We also made a growing pattern page and a repeating pattern page in our math journal.  Along with a title we had to write what it means to be a growing pattern and repeating pattern.  We came up with the ideas together and Mrs. put them on the smart board for us to use.  Once we finished we had to create an example of each type of pattern.

This afternoon we worked on adding some more ideas to our Color Show What You Know.  We talked about all the different ways you could talk about colors and not just talk about color mixing.
Some words that we used and had learned about were:
Opaque
Transparent
ROYGBIV
tints and shades
cool colors and warm colors
primary,secondary and tertiary
color wheel
color spectrum
color mixing
One of the things that we talked about was the color spectrum and an easy way to remember the colors is ROYGBIV.  Once the weather warms up we will take some prisms outside to experiment with light and the spectrum. Muhammed's did you know today was transparency means see-through and opaque means you can't see through.  Yafet's did you know today was that black is the shade that makes colors darker.  Joel's did you know today was that red, orange and yellow are warm colors.

If the weather warms up we will be doing this active outside however right now it is looking like we probably won't be able to go outside.  Just in case it changes please come prepared for either.

Our helper on Monday is Leo.

Wednesday 10 January 2018

Coffin Cares Assembly Day

At the coffin cares assembly Mrs. Polski reminded us that when we get to school we can knock on the door and go right inside.  All recess times will be indoors on a blue day.

When we came back to the room we worked on our family puppets.  The next step will be that we will have to write a little bit about each person.

In word work the grade twos worked on short and long vowels.  We had to come up with words that fit into each category for each vowel.  Tomorrow the grade twos will be working on a chart to find long and short vowel sound words and sorting them into the long or short category.  Grade ones worked on practicing the words from the "at' family.

In math today we learned about growing patterns.  The story was called Muncha, Muncha, Muncha.  {You can find it online}.
The story has two growing patterns in it.  After that we had a growing pattern challenge where we had to see if we could finish the growing patterns.  We had six to try.  We did them together.

Growing Pattern Challenges

Our homework is to be able to explain what a growing pattern is and what a repeating pattern is.  In math tomorrow we will have to show and tell about some of these patterns in our math journals.

This afternoon before we worked on our Color "Show What You Know", we had a sharing circle where we got to share some of our "Did You Know" facts about color.  This helped some of us come up with ideas in case we didn't have any yet.  Before we were allowed to have our free time we had to try and have two facts on our page.  Our free time activity today was Mathletics.

In gym today we got to try some warm up stations before we practiced our volleyball skills.   The stations were: step ups, jumping jacks, wall touch, plank, mountain climber, tuck jumps and skier.  At each station we had to do the activity 20 times.  Today we had to try 3 stations.

Our helper tomorrow is Maria.

Tuesday 9 January 2018

Library Day

This morning we were introduced to new centers for guided reading time.  They are all about exploring poetry.  The centers are reading poems with a friend, find a poem you love and mark it with a sticky note, write your own poem and practice a poem to share with the class.

Mrs. Kidd was happy to see that so many kids brought back their library books today!

After library we worked on our family puppets for our book project in Social Studies.

After recess the grade ones had word study while the grade twos had book time.  We practiced words from the "at" word family on little white boards. We had to brainstorm some words for that family and then we practiced spelling see of the words on our boards.
We also practiced three sight words: the, of, and.
The "at" words that we focused on were: that, cat, mat, sat, hat.  Tomorrow they will be doing an activity to practice these words while Mrs. Hamby works with the grade twos.

In math today we continued with our pattern hunt.  The grade ones had to include a picture and a label for the pattern.

The grade twos had to include a picture, label and also the letter translation of showing the pattern in another way.  We also talked about the core of the pattern and practiced some examples together.  There is a picture of some of the ideas that we talked about and practiced together

This afternoon we worked on our "Show What You know About Color",  in our art journals.  Here are some facts that Joel, Yafet and Muhammed came up with.
Did you know that red, yellow and orange are warm colors and blue, purple and green are cool colors.  Did you know that blue and red make purple.  Did you know that blue, yellow and red will make brown.

In music today we listened to different types of music and had to decide which we liked more.  He would play the songs and then we had to decide.  One example was jazz versus country.  People liked country music and rock and roll music the most.

In gym we practiced bumping and volleying with a partner today.  We also practiced volleying and then catching the ball with only one bounce.  We are practicing the skills we will need to play games once the nets are up, such as newcomb ball and volleyball dodgeball.

Tomorrow we will have a Coffin Cares Assembly in the morning at 9:00.  Students are invited to wear their green Coffin T-shirts.

Our helper tomorrow is Payton.

Monday 8 January 2018

Happy New Year and Welcome Back

This morning we were all excited to see each other and talk about our holidays.  We started the morning with drawing our journal pictures and carpet time for journal writing.

At the carpet we looked at pictures of the Amaryllis blooming over the holidays.  Mrs. Hamby was taking care of it over the holidays.  The blooms wee big and red.  There were about six or seven blooms.  It bloomed in the second week of holidays.  It is all finished now and Mrs. Hamby had to cut it off at the bulb to see if it will flower again.  If it doesn't she will have to take it out of the dirt and put it in a cool dark place.  We will try to grow it again next year.  She knew that it was time to cut it because the stems started to droop.

This morning we also looked at a journal target to remind us of the things we need to do in our journal writing to be in the middle of the target and meet the expectations for grade one and two.

After recess we got to choose either solo book time or journal writing.

In math we started a new unit about patterns.  We had to do a pattern hunt around the school and record our patterns in our math journals.  We knew that it was a pattern if it repeated at least three times an it stayed the same each time.  Solomon and Yafet found mats in the kindergarten room that had a color pattern.  They also found objects that made patterns such as tables an bowls.  We will continue our pattern hunt tomorrow.  Joel found a picture pattern that was tall, tall, short, short.

This afternoon we started working on a Color Show What You Know project in our art journals.  Tomorrow we will begin to add some of the things that we learned about colors now that we are color experts.

In gym today we started working on Volleyball skills.  We practiced trying to throw and volley and catch by having our elbows pointing out and trying to d]get the ball to go as high as we can.  We practiced against the wall and also with a buddy.
Tomorrow our helper is Satvik.  Tomorrow is also library.
