Summer Vacation Almost Here!

Today we worked on trying to finish up your stories.  We also worked on building our structures from Heritage Park.  The grade five and six classes sent helpers to help each group with their building this morning.   It was fun to have them.

After recess we had the year end/Coffin Cares assembly.  Mrs. Polski recognized many of the groups that work hard to keep our school running smoothly such as the green team, the office helpers, Spirit Day team and also the lunchroom cleanup crew.

This afternoon the grade six students vs. The teachers in a basketball game.
We cheered as hard as we could but the grade six team still won.
It was so much fun.

Tomorrow at 2:00 we will be having the grade six farewell assembly.
The kids will be brining home their belongings tomorrow.  Please send an extra bag if your child has a small backpack.

Transition Day

This morning we had a transition day.  The kindergartners went to the grade one and two classroom.  The grade twos went to the grade three and four classroom and the grade fours went to the grade five and six classroom.
We all stayed together as a group in each class instead of going to specific classrooms, since class lists won't be finalized until the beginning of September.

The kindergarteners and grade ones got to do an art project.  We all met together at the carpet and then Mrs. Hamby, Ms. Boyer and Mrs. Armour read a story called Waiting for Wings.  We talked about the life cycle of butterflies that the kindergarteners had in their classroom.

We buddied up and then we each got to do our own butterfly painting by folding our paper in half and dropping blobs of various paint colors.  Next we folded the paper over and squished it all together.  When we opened it up it was a cool butterfly.  We got to make a game choice with our buddy when we were done.  Once it was recess time we went outside together for recess.

When the grade twos went to the grade three classroom they started by doing a "daily edit" altogether at the carpet.  Once that was finished, they wanted us to show them how skilled we were at writing.  Our writing was supposed to be about some of our memories of grade two.  We were supposed to write about three memories, one short three sentence paragraph about each memory.

After recess we all went back to our rooms.  We went to our math groups.  We only have a couple days to finish up the number operations work that we have been doing.

In the afternoon we had swimming.

Our helpers tomorrow are Anisha and Elaina.

We ended our day today outside in the Natureground for the bench dedication.  Some of the grade six kids that were in Ms. Kestner class shared some of the things that they remembered the most about her.  One of them shared that Ms. Kestner gave him a special sunflower box the day she left the school, that he had made for the helper names.  Someone else shared that they remember that she always wore flowers in her hair.  When she said that she liked the flower Ms. Kestner took it our of her hair and gave it to her to put in her own hair.  Because of this memory each of the kids that shared put a daisy on the bench after they spoke. Mrs. Polski then read the dedication plaque that is on the bench. Mrs. Kidd crocheted a piece of art that she attached to the bench because Ms. Kestner and her ran the crochet club together.

This morning we began the day with some book time and then we worked on our story writing.
After recess we had some paper bag book pictures to glue in to our books and also to finish and then we went to our math groups.
This afternoon we worked on our building for Calgary Long Ago...

Tomorrow is Environment treat day.  They are selling banana bread from the Prairie Mill for 50 cents a piece.  The money goes towards many of the schools environmental efforts including gardening and outdoor tools needed for weeding and various other things.

Tomorrow is also a swimming day.

Father's Day Surprise

Today we worked on a Father's Day gift.  Our week was so busy with swimming we had to us some of  our Fresh Air Friday time to make a gift for Dad.  We did not want them to feel left out.  We worked really hard on sharing and writing some heart felt ideas and then created a special painting.

Once we were all finished we went outside to do some weeding in the Whispering Woods.  Today we were weeding dandelions and goats' beard.

On Monday at 3:00 there will be a special bench dedication in the Natureground.  The bench is in memory of Ms. Kestner.  She was a teacher who taught at Dr. Coffin for several years and passed away from cancer in 2014.  If there is anyone that would like to join the school for this please feel welcome to come.

Next week we will have swimming Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Sun Circle Gardening

We finally got the green in the sun circle planted!  We planted two types of beets, zucchini, potatoes and carrots.  We also have a parent that offered to bring us some tomato plants to plant.

This morning we worked on our story writing.  In story writing today we worked on finishing up our story beginnings and then begin working on the "kick off" and the introduction of the problem that might occur in or story.  We talked about taring to use words and ideas that create a movie in the mind of the person listening to your story.  For example, how does a porcupine move?  Does it lumber, waddle, shuffle?  We have been listening to many stories that use the same story frame that we are using for our stories.

We also worked on our time line and then we had our math groups.

This afternoon we finished up our blueprints for our buildings.  Mrs Hamby showed us how we would continue to work on the frame and how to look for weak spots that might need the triangle for support.

We ended the day with gardening and gym outside.

Ahmad is the helper tomorrow.

*Tomorrow is also a swimming day.

Blue Prints

This afternoon we got ready to begin our building project for Calgary Long Ago...  We had to draw blueprints for the building that we observed at Heritage Park.  We had to begin by planning what the frame of the building would look like and then trying to include that in our drawing.  We looked at pictures of a house when it is in the framing stages.  We noticed lots of triangles.  Mrs. Hamby demonstrated how we would use popsicle sticks to build the frame and then how to build triangles in the frame to make it stronger.  Without triangles it makes it wobbly and it wiggles.  We had to work with our group to begin our plans.  We also have to include a material list for what we will need for building.

Gavin is our helper tomorrow.

*Tomorrow is swimming and Wednesday is a spirit day, beach day.

Blueprint drawings so far...
